Obituary For Abel A. Aleman

Abel Aleman went to be with his Lord and Savior and fellow baseball cronies at the big baseball diamond in the sky. He was the fifth of eight children born to Helen and Pete Aleman. He was born in Sherman, Texas in his grandparents back bedroom at 711 West Cherry Street on August 1st, 1942.

Abel came from a very humble beginning as he and his family lived in a one room house on Centennial Street by the Frisco Railroad tracks. To get to the family outhouse, one had to cross the railroad tracks. Abel started working with his parents at three years old, pulling cotton, and by age six he was chopping wood daily for the family's wood stove.

One of the biggest influences on Abel’s life was his school principal of twelve years, Walter Carpenter. Carpenter not only supported Abel’s academics but also his athletic career. Carpenter nurtured and supported Abel’s love of sports which became the backbone of his life. Abel lettered in football as a running back and baseball as a shortstop at Sherman High School. The number thirty-three was worn on his back during his athletic career and set the tone for the Aleman family number to be worn on every Aleman athletic jersey. A proud tribute worn by his brothers, children, nephews, and grandchildren. Abel graduated from Sherman High School in 1960.

Abel played baseball at Paris Junior college, which he considered to be the best years of his life. During his time at Paris Junior College, Abel was introduced to Judy Gray by her cousins Buddy and Gary Gray, on July 1st, 1961. That introduction blossomed into the love story that became the heartbeat of his life. He then attended Texas A&M at Commerce where he double majored in Industrial Management and Economics & Finance. Abel married the love of his life, Judy Gray, on the fourth of September, 1965. He was drafted at midterm of his senior year and was sent with the Army Infantry to Fort Polk, Louisiana then Tigerland Advanced Training and ultimately the Vietnam War.

During his service in the United States Army, Sergeant (E-5) Abel Aleman served with the 23rd Infantry (Americal) Division during the Vietnam War and the 3rd U.S Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard,” the Army’s oldest active infantry regiment and the official ceremonial unit of the United States Army created by George Washington. Aleman’s platoon spent over 125 straight days in the field on assignments during the monsoon season. He earned the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster (denoting two awards of the Bronze Star) for valor, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

After Abel’s release from the Army he returned to finish his Business degree at Texas A&M Commerce as he and Judy welcomed their first born son, Lane, into the world. Abel then moved his family to Denison, Texas where he owned and operated Aleman’s Mexican Restaurant for 13 years while also establishing Abel Aleman Roofing Company. Abel spent the rest of his life growing his business, giving back to the Texoma community, and raising his beautiful family alongside Judy. Above all, his greatest joy was being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Abel leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years Judy Gray Aleman, three beloved children; Lane (Yona), Ashley Ann Aleman Yerkes (David), and Tony (Christina). The highlights of his life are his nine grandchildren; Trenton (Allison), Viviana, Peyton, Grant, Jack, Parker, Julia, Analeia, and Max and great granddaughters Kylie and Lizzie.

Visitation will be held at Dannel Funeral Home on Sunday August 30th, 2026 2-4pm, 302 S Walnut St, Sherman, TX 75090.

Services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Monday August 31st, 2026 11am, 401 N Elm St, Sherman, TX 75090.

Burial will be held at Westhill Cemetery, Sherman TX

    Abel was the best of the best....the best husband, the best dad, the best grand dad, the best businessman, the best friend, and the best chef of my favorite enchiladas and salsa! My son Jason ate his first real food at Aleman's in Denison in 1978. He served his country, his church, and his community with dignity and honesty. It was a privilege to be a friend to Abel and Judy and their entire family. He will be missed by all those who knew him.
