Obituaries

The death of Betty Knowles came on January 31 2013. A graveside service will be held on Mon. Feb. 4 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Weather permitting there will be a graveside service only. There will be no formal visitation. The youngest of three children Betty Jean Knowles was born to James Roy Brooks and Estella M. Brooks on June 25 1922 in Montgomery County Kansas. Her siblings were Clarence Brooks and Barbara (Brooks) Garst. All are deceased. She grew up on a farm and attended a one room country school a small town high school and Independence Junior College in Independence Kansas. In 1942 she married her teenage sweetheart Paul A. Loggan. He lost his life seven months later when the carrier U.S. S. Hornet was sunk in the South Pacific. Betty worked at Consolidated Vultee Air Craft Corporation in San Diego California during World War II and in 1944 she married Mike James Knowles. After her husband was honorably discharged from the Navy she graduated from the University of Texas in Austin. They made their homes in several places in West Texas where she taught school. She completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics and her Master of Science Degree in Clothing and Textiles at Texas Technical University. She taught Home Economics at Sundown High School and Whiteface High School where she was privileged to work with girls from the Girls Town U.S.A. Betty was also a crew chief for the 1960 Census of Hockley County in West Texas. When the Grayson County College opened the family moved to Sherman in 1965 where Betty"¢s husband was the Dean of Business. After her husband"¢s early retirement due to illness they spent a number of summers in the northwest of the State of Washington. Betty was an active member of the Central Christian Church of Sherman. Betty was predeceased by her husband Mike Knowles on May 29 2000. Betty Knowles is survived by her son Michael James Knowles, his wife Elizabeth Ann of Sherman, and her grandson Michael Kent Knowles who lives in Corpus Christi, and her granddaughter Brigette Ann Green who lives in Asheville North Carolina.
