Obituary For Betty Vogel Cantrell

Betty Vogel Cantrell, longtime Sherman resident, passed away, April 16, 2024, at Texoma Healthcare.

The youngest of four children, Betty was born to Mintia Campbell Vogel and John Benno Vogel on March 14, 1924, in McAlester, Oklahoma. Her father died when she was five years old, and her mother successfully reared her family during the great Depression era.

Betty was a student at Oklahoma A & M College in 1941 when the United States entered World War II. She transferred her sophomore year to Southeastern Oklahoma State College where she met her future husband, William Grover Cantrell, Jr., a senior transfer student in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. They married May 15, 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Cadet Cantrell was in the college training detachment at the University of Tennessee. She remained with her husband while he served stateside until his discharge in March 1946, at which time they returned to Sherman to make their home.

Betty was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class since 1946, and a life member of United Methodist Women. She was an active member since 1950 of the Stratford Club and a charter member of the Ethel Rentfro Review Club. She also served as a volunteer in the WNJ Hospital Auxiliary for many years. Betty had been a part of the Austin College community as an administrative secretary from 1956 until 1972.

In addition to her parents Betty was preceded by her husband William Grover Cantrell of sixty years in 2003, and two sisters and a brother. She is survived by her twin son and daughter: James Vogel Cantrell and wife Cindy of Lakewood, Colorado and Alice Cantrell Rider and husband Chris of Bella Vista, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Jennifer Owen of Keller, Jeffery J. Johnson and wife Jennifer of West Lake, Brian J. Cantrell of Austin, and Katie Cantrell Gann and husband Mark of Lakewood, Colorado, and great grandson Cooper. Also surviving are three nieces and their families.

Dannel Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements, with a visitation at Dannel Funeral Home, Monday, April 22, 2024 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. A Graveside Service will be held at West Hill Cemetery Pavilion on Monday, April 22, 2024 at 11:30 AM. Rev. Joe Ed Goolsby of First United Methodist Church Sherman will officiate.

My sympathies to all the family. Aunt Betty certainly has a lot of bragging rights to have done so much in her life and to have reached her goal to live to 100. That is so amazing. Way to go Aunt Betty! Love to all, Shari

Betty was a long time friend - at least 60 years. We lived across the street from each other. Enjoyed our church ; Fellowship SS class, UMW groups, Great People luncheons, knitting group and going to Stratford Club together. Our code was to call each other if our shade/blind was not opened by ten every morning. Will truly miss her-friend & neighbor she was. Wanda Groce
