Obituary For C.H. "Cam" Gillespie, III

Campbell Houston Gillespie, III, age 85, of Sherman, Texas, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024.

He was born in Sherman on August 21, 1938. Cam graduated from Sherman High School in 1956. He attended and graduated from The University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree in history and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He went on to pursue his law degree from The University of Texas Law School, graduating in 1963.

Cam was married to Mary Bert Pattillo on September 1, 1962, at University Christian Church in Austin, Texas. Cam and Mary met on a blind date in Austin. Cam returned to Sherman in 1963 to practice law with his father, Campbell H. Gillespie, Jr. He retired from practicing law in March of 2020. Cam enjoyed his experiences with Boy Scouts of America, advancing to an Eagle Scout, camping at Philmont in New Mexico, and later leading a scout troop at First Presbyterian Church for several years.

As a lifelong member of Covenant Presbyterian Church (formerly First Presbyterian) in Sherman, Cam served the church in many ways - as a Deacon, an Elder, a Trustee, and a member of various committees over the years.

Cam supported many organizations within his community and was especially interested in helping families through Habitat for Humanity. Some of his hobbies included golf, hunting quail and dove, raising bird dogs, and working in his vegetable garden focusing on corn and blackberries. He was a very committed fan of the Texas Longhorns. Ice Cream outings and Club Lake fishing trips with his grandchildren were a highlight of the past 20+ summers.

Cam was preceded in death by his parents, Campbell Houston Gillespie, Jr. and Mary McMurdo Gillespie.

Cam is survived by his wife Mary, daughters; Maryanna Pearson of Boerne and Cary and husband Lance Wilson of Peachtree City, Georgia; his six grandchildren; John, Will, Jake Pearson, Caryanne, Elizabeth, and Sarah Wilson; his brother; Bob Gillespie and wife Susan along with nephews; Bill and Jessica Gillespie (Charlie and AJ) and James Gillespie.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. The family will receive friends at an evening visitation on Friday, March 1, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Dannel Funeral Home.

Memorial gifts in celebration of Campbell Gillespie’s life may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 322 W. Pecan, Sherman, TX 75090 or Habitat for Humanity of Grayson County, P.O. Box 2725, Sherman, TX 75091.

Cam, our nextdoor neighbor, I will not forget you rescuing me with your lawn mower when a herd of cattle came into our back yard and to the side of our house, ready to eat our flowers and plants. You were my hero.

First met Cam 24 years ago while I was working for a title company in Sherman. He was the nicest person to work with and was always there if we needed him or had questions regarding the property he was representing. He will surely be missed. Prayers for your family. Renae Douglas
