Obituary For Charles Anton Schweizer
Charles Anton Schweizer was born April 30. 1936 in Dallas, Texas, the son of Alfred and Frances Plesek Schweizer. He passed away December 23, 2020. We all lost a wonderful man on that day.
Born and raised in Dallas, Charlie graduated from Forrest Avenue High School and attended Texas A & M University, graduating in 1957. He was an “Aggie” through and through and kept in touch with many of his Aggie friends. In 1960, he married Laverne Barrow and they had two daughters, Sheryl and Stephanie. Laverne passed away in 1981 and in 1992, Charlie married Darlene Garner and they spent the last 28 years enjoying every single day together.
In 1970 Charlie moved his family to Sherman to manage the local office for Eppler, Guerin & Turner (now Wells Fargo Advisors). Sherman became his home and he spent the rest of his life serving the community in different capacities. He was a long-time member of the Noon Rotary Club, serving as President and maintaining perfect attendance. He served on the SISD School Board in the 1980s and was a strong supporter of the Sherman Symphony. In early years after moving to Sherman Charlie loved sailing. He was a member of the Texoma Sailing Club and earned many trophies racing his sailboat, “Tobasco”. He was an avid bridge player and looked forward to his monthly bridge group as well as his monthly poker group. He was a member of the Texoma Wine Society and spent time organizing wine-tasting dinners for the group. He loved to travel and made many trips with friends. He was a long-time member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir every Sunday.
Education was extremely important to Charlie and Grayson College Foundation became his project. He spent many years serving on the Board of the Foundation as President and as an advocate of the Foundation. Many scholarships will be awarded students as a result of his efforts on behalf of the Foundation. In the last few years, Charlie joined two of his Rotary friends in a mentoring project working with young men in high school. This became his pet project and he met with the “boys” every Monday evening during the last few years.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Laverne, his daughter, Sheryl, and his brother, Fred. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Darlene, his daughter, Stephanie Schweizer, grandchildren, Joey Jaramillo and wife, RaChelle, Jayson Jaramillo and Micallie Jaramillo and Mynor Salazar, four great grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Connie Schweizer, nieces, nephews and many, many wonderful friends. Charlie loved his family and took great pride in securing the education of each grandchild and great-grandchild. He loved life and he loved the people in his life. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten.
A service celebrating Charlie’s life will be held at such time as the pandemic will allow. Memorials honoring his life may be made to Grayson College Foundation, 6101 Grayson Drive, Denison, TX 75020.
