Charline Frances Sample (affectionately known by family and friends as Nan), 83, passed away on May 24, 2014 in Sherman, Texas. A memorial service will be held at Dannel Funeral Home on June 5, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life party will follow at 1802 W. Scott Street, Sherman, where many of her favorite home cooked foods will be served. Ms. Sample was born to Gerald and Elnor Jones on September 15, 1930 in Barranquilla, Columbia, South America. Gerald Jones was a member of the Foreign Service. She had one sister, Patricia Perkins. As a child, Ms. Sample resided in Belfast, Ireland, and Cuba. On April 16, 1948, Ms. Sample married Major James H. Sample. Major Sample was a member of the Air Force through three wars: WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. They had three children, Cheryl, Paul and Pat Sample. Major and Mrs. Sample made Sherman their permanent home in August, 1960. Ms. Sample was primarily a homemaker and provided great support to her husband while he served in the military. She also work as a chapel secretary for Austin College, at Information and Referral, and finally at Education Plus. She also served as a Pink Lady at Wilson N. Jones Hospital. Ms. Sample had three grandchildren: Laura M. Shockley of Dallas, Lisa M. Spurgeon and Lydia M. Spurgeon, both of Sherman. She was the great-grandmother to Hannah Louise Hilliard, Hayden Richard Shockley, Jacob Paul Guerrero and Matthew Jaxon Guerrero. Ms. Sample was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Elnor Jones, Major James Sample and her son, Paul Sample. She is survived by: her sister and brother-in-law Patricia and Frank Perkins; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and James Spurgeon; her son Patrick Sample; her granddaughters Laura M. Shockley, Lisa M. Spurgeon and her fiancé Michael Sanders, and Lydia M. Spurgeon; great grandchildren Hannah Louise Hilliard, Hayden Richard Shockley, Jacob Guerrero and Matthew Guerrero; her nieces Cindy Conningsby and Robin Perkins. Rather than mourn the death of Ms. Sample, she wanted her family and friends to celebrate her life. She requested a party after her service where people could enjoy her favorite foods, fill the house with laughter, and remember all of the happy times she shared with those she loved. The party will be held at the home where she resided since 1960 and is occupied by her family.
