Obituary For Dr. Clayton James Morris

Dr. Clayton James Morris of Denison, Texas passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the age of 50. He was born in Austin, Texas on March 4th, 1975, to Tim and Margie Morris. Clay was a 1993 graduate of Sherman High School and went on to graduate with high honors in 1996 from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. After earning a Bachelor of Science in biology and minor in chemistry, he then went on to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 from Texas A&M University.

Clay is survived by his wife, Stacey Morris, and son, Caleb, and daughter, Paige, of Denison, his parents Tim and Margie Morris of Sherman, his sister, Kimberly McDaniel and husband, Kyle, of Melissa, his brother, Grant Morris and wife, Jamie, of McKinney, and numerous nieces and nephews: Jaden, Jamison, and Jett Adams; Carson, Tinsley, and Anniston Fountain; Matthew and Chase McDaniel; and Presleigh and Phoenix Morris. He was preceded in death by grandparents Newell Morris, Robert Porter, Mayme Porter, and Naomi Hurley. And, of course, many of his four-legged friends.

Clay was a beloved local vet for the last 25 years at Brakebill Veterinary Hospital in Sherman, Texas. He worked under the tutelage and guidance of Dr. John and Danny Brakebill for several years before acquiring the practice. The fondness and adoration he had for the Brakebill staff, as well as his furry clients and their families, was palpable. Clay’s passion and love of caring for animals likely began at the young age of four, when he woke up one Christmas morning to his first puppy, Woodsy. Throughout his childhood and into his teenage years that passion never waned, and his love for the profession grew stronger with each precious pet and passing year.

Anyone who knew Clay or was fortunate enough to have even a momentary interaction with him could tell you just how wicked smart he was. Not only could he throw a mean stitch in a surgery through years of practice as a vet, he also taught himself how to do a variety of things, many of which became his hobbies. He had an affinity for woodworking which he used to restore his first historic home and made many works of art such as boxes, tables, screen doors, and birdhouses...and was partial to dovetail joints. As a teenager, he even made his own wooden half-pipe to live out his skateboarding dreams, which quickly came crashing down after a broken arm. In his later years, he decided to switch to less perilous activities such as golf and yoga. His voracious reading habit lended itself to everything from diesel engine metrics to Jimmy Buffet, but also included good ‘ol paper maps, because while Clay was an exceptional Boy Scout in his youth and an overall brainiac in general, his sense of direction was just about the one thing that never really took hold.

Clay was also an avid outdoorsman. He loved camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, and often rose very early in the morning to get in a quick walk or jog around Hagerman park. A devoted family man, he would frequently join his family in their many outdoor adventures, as well - Stacey’s love of wildlife photography and camping, Caleb’s joy of running and soccer, and Paige’s shared passion for building and gardening and a burgeoning love of tennis, a penchant of Clay’s since childhood when he played on the SHS tennis team and taught tennis at Four Seasons Tennis Club.

Please join us in a Celebration of Life to be held at Austin College’s Wynne Chapel on Monday, June 30th at 3:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at Mabee Hall in the Wright Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home.

The family sincerely appreciates the outpouring of love and support from Clay’s patients, friends, and the community, and in lieu of flowers, requests that donations be made to one of Clay’s supported charities, ARFhouse (Animal Refuge Foundation) in Sherman, TX or the National Park Foundation.

Condolences

  • July 22, 2025

We will miss our visits with Dr. Morris. He was always kind and took the time to explain what was going on with our pets in a way that was compationate and clear. When we first took our lab-pit mix to him, our pup had been is such distress and so were we. Dr. Morris was recommended to us by a friend after a previous vet has shown fear of our dog. Dr. Morris handled our frightened and in pain dog with ease and made changes in his care that we believe saved his life. We will miss him terribly. Our dogs were always excited to go into his office. The staff is so kind and caring. My heart goes out to them as well as his family. Such a loss.

I am shocked just now hearing of this great loss not only to our community. When we lost Dr Brakebill, I wondering if anyone else could take his place in my life of pets. I began using Dr Brakebill in when he took over the clinic. Then Dr Morris took over with the same compassionate care. My last visit was with my precious 17 yr old Georgia Dog when Dr Morris so compassionately helped me let her go. His heart for all our pets and us as family will be hard to replace.

  • July 04, 2025

    He was a great Veterinarian.

  • July 03, 2025

Losing Clay is like losing a member of my own family; he was there so many times during the ups and downs with all of our furbabies; offering advice and reassurance when he would tell us our options for their case, even when I would ask him, "what would you do?" He was the best vet we ever had, over many years caring for our furbabies, he made our lives more bearable when we would lose one. Clay was the best, most empathetic, knowledgeable, compassionate and patient vet we had the great privilege of knowing. To say we will miss him is an understatement, as he left an indelible mark wherever he went. I cannot imagine the heartache his family and staff are feeling, but am praying that God will comfort all of you in the coming days. Robert and Melissa Thompson

I'm shocked and saddened to hear about Dr. Morris. He was amazing with my furbabies. He was so compassionate when treating my little Maxx, then when we lost Sailor unexpectedly. And came full circle when he got down in the floor to play with new puppy, Lilibet. Sending prayers to his family and wonderful staff on this unimaginable loss. 🙏🏻❤️

  • June 29, 2025

Words of sympathy feel inadequate in expressing grief and sorrow for a loss so great. Dr. Morris was the kindest, caring, and most empathetic veterinary doctor we have ever been to. He lovingly cared for many of our rescued adoptive dogs and he was so kind and gentle when he had to send some over the Rainbow Bridge. Dr. Morris knew how much we appreciated him for caring for our doggie family. He will be greatly missed by so many people. We are sending our condolences and prayers to Stacey, their children, family, Brakebill Veterinary Staff, and friends. Kathy and Theo Brauch

Dr Morris was an incredible vet—as these testimonies all attest! He was gentle, thorough and considerate of the furry patients—even more so of the owners. • June 27, 2025

I was so saddened to learn of Dr. Clay Morris' premature passing. He was my cat Tabitha's veterinarian from the time she was a kitten until her final days. Dr. Morris' exceptional compassion and communication skills as a doctor were not only a vocation, but also a gift. For example, I will never forget the generous way he conferred his kindness on both Tabitha and me when we lost our apartment to a fire in Sherman. My heart goes out to his family, office staff, and many, many friends. Although his passing was shocking and tragic, his legacy--based on the tributes I have read( and on my own personal life experiences with him)--will continue to inspire us. He was a healer in the best sense of the word. With gratitude and in remembrance, Roger Platizky

  • June 27, 2025

Dr. Morris was the kindest and best of men, and the most skilled and compassionate of vets. We will never forget how wonderful he was to us on the day our dog Hank died, and the expert care he gave all the animals we brought to him, from our own pets to neighborhood strays we were helping. We are so sad and he will be so missed!

  • June 27, 2025

One of the kindest and most compassionate people I have met- an extraordinary veterinarian who we trusted take care of our animals to... this comes as a shock. We were just there with our dachshund, not very long ago, and we make every check up for our three as scheduled and on time. To the family of Dr. Morris, on behalf of myself and My Wife, Miss Bethela adams, we extend to you our love, our deepest, most heartfelt sympathies, and you will remain in our prayers indefinitely. May God bring you mercy from your pain and may he comfort you all in this time. Sincerely, and most graciously, Justin Jaxon Adams.

  • June 26, 2025

  • June 26, 2025

I am so saddened to hear of Dr. Morris' passing. He has taken tremendous care of all my babies for the last 20 years and helped my family whenever we had to say goodbye to one. It was evident that he cared for each of his patients. He will be sorely missed. My heart is heavy for his family. Praying for God's loving comfort for you all.

  • June 26, 2025

I'm so sad to hear about Dr. Morris. We have been seeing him for over a decade at this point. He was very kind to us when we needed it. After meeting him and seeing how he was with our dogs, I never wanted to see another vet. Condolences to the family and the people who worked with him. We are thinking of you and we'll miss him greatly.

  • June 26, 2025

My sincere condolences to Dr Morris's wife, children and family. The world has lost an awesome, outstanding human. I hope the family knows how his furry patients love him. I can ask my LuLu if she wants to go see Dr Morris and she starts wiggling around and wagging her tail. This is such a lose for so many. Lots of prayers and love for you all. 🙏❤️

  • June 26, 2025

I am heartbroken to hear about Dogtor Morris (as we fondly referred to him as) passing. For over 10+ years, he has been more than just a Veterinarian-he has been a constant source of comfort, kindness, support and a voice of reason when I needed it. He never rushed me, never dismissed a concern of mine, no matter how small ... or how crazy it might've sounded. He always listened. Each of my Furheathens had their own preferred approach & he did exactly that for each of them.. every single time. When it came time to help Sam across the Rainbow Bridge, he (and staff) made an impossible decision a bit easier to make. The words he spoke to me that week, will always remain in my heart. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, at home & the clinic. You are in our hearts and hope you feel thee outpouring love & gratitude from all that he crossed paths with. - Twalla Grant

  • June 26, 2025

I am just shocked and so sad on the passing of Dr Morris. He took such great care of my fur babies and always took time to make sure I understood everything. My heart is so heavy for his family, friends, and staff. Thinking about and praying for you all. 💔

  • June 26, 2025

Morris family -- my heart goes out to you and I'm so sorry for your loss. Clay was without a doubt one of the best people I ever had the pleasure to know. He was a caring soul and with a heart of gold, and he left so many good memories with so many different people. I'm going to miss you CJ: I'll always remember your genius brain getting us through group projects, scuba diving the murky Lake Texoma coves after school, our weekly golf outings on the hard fairways at Grayson when we finally got our grown-up jobs, and of course the pups you take care of for me for the past 25 years.

  • June 26, 2025

I cannot tell you how shocked and saddened I was when I heard of the loss of Dr. Morris. He was such a kind and caring vet and I just thought the world of him. My animals were cared for in such a way that I knew I had been blessed with a person who cared with his whole heart. May God bless the family with peace during this difficult time.

  • June 25, 2025

The absolute best vet my fur babies have had. Been loving and caring for our numerous pets since 2007. Frankie and Tucker will miss you. As will their humans. Judi and Ray Blair. Now you will meet in the fields with all the fur babies you've cared for that have gone to heaven.

  • June 25, 2025

No words. Just a great appreciation. Great sadness now. The Slagle Family.

  • June 25, 2025

Clay Morris DVM was a stellar vet, caring for my kitty, Soledad, and my two pups, June and Grace. I trusted him completely and felt confident in his care for my "babies." I was so sorry to hear this sad news. Such a tremendous loss. He was kind, competent & had a great "bedside manner" with his patients and their "parents." He was a blessing.

  • June 25, 2025

Dr. Morris was a very kind, loving person! I will forever cherish the times we had with him in the veterinary field. My condolences to his family.

  • June 25, 2025

We are so shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Morris. For 25 years, he provided the best care one could ever hope to find for an animal family. He helped us celebrate and extend the good times, and find our way when the times were rough. His ability to listen, his patience, his compassion, his understanding, and his generosity were beyond remarkable. They made the world a better place. He will be greatly missed.

  • June 25, 2025

Dr. Morris was absolutely amazing with my 4 fur babies! He was there when my 16 year old golden crossed the rainbow and was empathetic and extremely supportive. He will be greatly missed!

  • June 25, 2025

Morris and Brakebill family ~ Words feel inadequate right now, please know my thoughts and prayers are with each of you! Dr.M treated my Georgia girl (GSP) this past December for almost three weeks. He called EVERY day to check on her status. His true compassion for both humans and animals were exceptional and innate. I am sorry for your tremendous loss.

  • June 25, 2025

When I learned that the man who had so caringly taken care of the various cats and dogs in my family's lives had suddenly departed this world, I was stunned. Having read many of the outpourings of sympathy and love for this man, I am reminded of the following by John Donne: "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee." The effects of Clay's death ripples out from his family to our community and beyond. We are diminished. - John West

  • June 24, 2025

Dr. Morris had taken care of my two Sphinx cats for the past 10 years. In fact, he saw them late in the day on Friday, the day before his passing. I'm trying to process the shocking news of his passing that I learned of this morning. He always took the time to talk and listen, and he did so with immense compassion, empathy, and grace. He was never arrogant or dismissive. After I lost my poodle 12/31/23, I wrestled with the fear that I had made a mistake in agreeing to euthanize her at the emergency clinic after she suddenly developed aplastic anemia with septic shock. She was only two. He let me cry and he consoled me. He said that sending her to internal medicine specialists for complete evaluations, along with many blood and plasma transfusions would have been too much for her little body. He said he wouldn't put his own dog through that. I needed to hear that so badly, and I could then rest in my decision that it was the right one. He was an incredible veterinarian and an incredible person. The world lost a light on June 21, 2025. I pray for his family to find comfort and healing in the face of this terrible loss.

  • June 24, 2025

I am so very sad to hear of this. Dr. Morris was such a kind, intelligent and patient person and his loss will be felt by so many.

I was referred to Dr Morris when my vet at the time basically gave up on my aging chihuahua. His knowledge and attention to detail gave him a diagnosis that allowed Taco to live two more happy, healthy years. I notice a common pattern in these messages and that is he made everyones pets feel special and loved. My dogs never feared "going to the vet". His staff is amazing and my heart goes out to them. Prayers to his family. This is a huge loss for our furry friends. Gig'em and Godspeed! Ashley, the late Taco & late Dixie, Bingo, Chewy, Tipsy and Lewis.

RIP Clay! Was a great friend all through school and Boy Scouts! So many wonderful memories that I will cherish.

  • June 24, 2025

After the passing of Dr Brakebill, Dr Morris took over the care of my animals. I was apprehensive because I was so enamored with Dr Brakebill; however upon meeting Dr Morris he immediately put my mind at rest. Many, many years have passed, and he has consoled me through losing several of my pets. There's never been a kinder, more caring doctor for the four legged members of my family. I am not only shocked at Dr Morris's passing, but I am saddened beyond words. Godspeed, Dr Morris. You will always be a hero in my eyes.

  • June 24, 2025

Dear family. I am so sorry to hear Clay has passed away. We became friends in high school in Miss Loops US history class. We exchanged letters for a few years. When visiting Sherman, I stopped by the clinic to say "hi", and he always found the time for that. He was such a nice person. I will always remember him. I am so sorry for your loss. Best regards, Nina from Norway, exchange student 1989/90.

  • June 24, 2025

I only met Dr. Morris one time (it was September 13, 2010), but I'll always remember his kindness and his efforts to save my Mix boy who was in sudden heart failure. It was before we had the emergency clinic, and Dr. Morris was the on-call vet. He started Mix's IV and arranged for him to be treated at the emergency hospital in Allen. We didn't even make it out of town. I went back to the clinic where Dr. Morris very gently wrapped Mix's little body until I could make other arrangements. Dr. Morris took such loving care of so many of God's creatures. I can only imagine how he was greeted at Heaven's gate...and I have no doubt Mix was there!

Dear Margie and Tim, I am so very sorry for the heartache you are experiencing. I understand how deep the pain is. I didn't know Clay was your son until recently. He was Apache's vet for 15 years and was absolutely wonderful. His kindness and bedside manner meant so much to both Apache and me. He truly made a difference. In Clay's honor, I will be making a donation to ARF House. That's also where I send donations in Rob's memory each year, and it feels like a meaningful way to remember them both. It is with sadness that I learned of Dr Morris's passing. We thought the world of him. He has been our vet since we moved back to Texas. He has seen my dogs from puppyhood until the Rainbow Bridge. We admired how knowledgeable he was diagnosing a couple of rare issues with our pups. He was always kind, understanding and could explain issues so well. He also took the conservative care, if he was able, so that he didn't charge unnecessarily. He had a happy staff who are devastated. We will keep his family and staff in our prayers and heart. We are so very sorry for the loss of your loved one. He was a special person. We will make a donation to ARF House as he did for all our dogs when they passed. Wish my current dog could have the benefit of his care.

Heartbroken, there is no other way to describe it. We have used Dr. Morris to care for our pets since the day he started his practice at Brakebill's, and care for our pets he did. He always treated them with knowledgeable care, compassion and a gentle loving nature. Over the years he helped many of our fur babies cross the rainbow bridge and I'll be forever grateful for the kindness he gave as our hearts broke. We hope his family and co-workers gain strength from all the prayers being said as everyone mourns along with them. Our community lost a great man.

Dr Morris was always kind and generous with his advice. It was only 2 months ago that I last saw him about our little chihuahua. See you in the next life my friend.

  • June 23, 2025

I'm sad to hear of Dr. Morris' passing. He took care of several of my dogs for years. He had such a tranquil voice and was so kind and caring. Lexus would always lay in the floor refusing to go in the back for an exam. Dr. Morris would always get in the floor with her and gently pet her and talk to her so lovingly. Then she would get up and go. He was a great vet and the community has suffered a great loss. Prayers for Stacey, their children and the staff at Brakebill Vet Hospital.
