Obituary For Eugene Roberts
Eugene Grady Roberts passed away peacefully on June 3, 2015 after a long, courageous struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born to Eugene G. Roberts, Sr. and Essie Mae Roberts on August 4, 1928 in Brownfield, Texas. His mother died of childbirth complications the day after his birth and he was raised by his Grandmother, Saloma Garmon, known as Goodmama. Gene was raised in the Gladewater, Texas area and graduated from Union Grove High School, graduating in 1945. Upon graduation, he joined the Army and served for 3 years as a radio operator on B-17’s flying out of the Philippines. He then worked in the oil industry until settling with his family in Sherman, Texas in 1964 and working as a route salesman. He is predeceased by his grandmother, his parents, his brothers, James Roberts and Jessie Ervin, and his wife, Nell Roberts, who he lovingly cared for during her ten year ordeal with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his sister, Kay Taylor, of Gladewater and by his wife of 8 years, Dorothy Roberts of Denison, who has lovingly cared for him during his illness. Gene was immensely proud of his children, Jay Roberts (Cathy) of Plano,TX, Jerry Roberts (Fran) of Benbrook,TX, Paige Henderson of Ft. Worth, TX, Greg Roberts (Linda) of Dallas,TX and step-sons, Jerry Kilgore (Thresa) of Cartwright, OK and Randy Westerhaver of Houston, TX. He has 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren of whom he was also extremely proud. Gene was an outgoing man, with many friends in the north Texas and southern Oklahoma area. He was a long time member of Trinity Presbyterian, now Covenant Presbyterian. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church with Reverend Denise Odom officiating with interment to follow at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas.
