Obituaries

A graveside service for Floyd Herbert Smith, Jr., who passed away on Wednesday, March 12,
2025, at his home surrounded by his family, will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, 10:00 AM at
Enterprise Cemetery in Sherman. Fr. Mark Frimann will officiate.
Herbert was born on June 7, 1944, in Whitesboro, Texas, to Floyd H. and Hazel Blakley Smith.
He was raised in Southmayd, attended Southmayd schools and graduated the first year of S
& S Consolidated, in 1962. He joined the Marine Corps in 1965 and served his country in
Vietnam until 1967, as a cannoneer. He married Brenda Hobbs in 1967, and they moved back to
his hometown of Sherman, Texas. They had a daughter, Shannon Smith and they continued to
live in Sherman where Herbert was in construction, drove trucks and operated heavy
equipment. He physically built his house one paycheck at a time.
Upon his retirement, Herbert became involved in Photography, woodworking, computer
assembly, and he wrote several short stories. He had the ability to teach himself anything he
was interested in. Herbert was a man of sincere Faith, and he maintained his belief his entire
life. He loved his family, particularly his daughter Shannon, granddaughter Virginia, and great
granddaughter, Sutton, who in his eyes could do no wrong.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Gene Allen. He is survived by his
wife of 57 years, Brenda Smith of Sherman; daughter, Shannon Smith Ryan of Sherman;
granddaughter, Virginia Thornton and husband Rance of Bells; great granddaughter, Sutton
Thornton, and her new baby sister expected in July. He is also survived by a brother, Timothy
Smith of Sherman; four sisters: Mary Jane, Eunice, Martha, and Sally; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
There will be a reception honoring Herbert at Shannon’s home following the graveside on
Friday.
The family would like to thank the Drs. and staff at Home Hospice of Grayson County, especially
Mike and Rachel, for the remarkable care given to them.
