Obituary For George Bernhardt

George Thomas Bernhardt, 77, of Luella, TX, passed away on January 6, 2018 at home. Rosary will be lead by Deacon Albert Miller at 6:00 PM at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman, TX. Visitation will follow the rosary. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday January 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Reverend Jeremy Myers celebrating the Mass and Reverend Antonio Aureus assisting. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements are by Dannel Funeral Home. George was born in New York City, NY to Charles Walter Bernhardt and Virginia Ethel Christian on April 23, 1940. He went to William Cullen Bryant High School in Astoria, NY. He married his pen-pal and soul mate Ann Dolores Tarr on October 15, 1960 in Perth Amboy, NJ. He was a jack of all trades, working as a carpenter, truck driver, painter and drill pressman. He served in the US Army in Augsburg, Germany. He was involved in the Knights of Columbus #299 in Perth Amboy, NJ, pitched for the Meade Street Aces in Perth Amboy, NJ and the Teamsters from Jersey City, NJ. George enjoyed working on racecars, Kawasaki motorcycles, tennis and music. George was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Virginia Bernhardt of Astoria, NY, in-laws, Steven and Sophie Tarr of Perth Amboy, NJ, grandparents Thomas and Lillian Christian of Astoria, NY, uncle Thomas Christian of Astoria, NY, aunt Lillian Ella Wetterhuus of Humble, TX and Jack and Jean Christian O’Rourke of Palenville, NY and many friends. George is survived by his wife Ann Dolores of 57 years, son, George Thomas Bernhardt Jr. and his wife Pamela Diane, daughter Diane Barton and her husband George, grandchildren Lt. Christopher Barton of US Air Force of Colorado Springs, CO, Sarah Elizabeth Bernhardt of Culpepper, VA, Ann Christian Barton of North Richland Hills and George Bernhardt III of Dallas. Cousin Alan Wetterhuus and wife Linda of Humble, TX, brother-in-law Valentine Tarr and wife Ann of Sayreville, NJ, brother-in-law Steven Tarr Sr and wife Lorraine of Beaumont, CA, Nieces Tiffany Tarr of Sayreville, NJ, Christine Tarr Chorba of Pasadena, CA, Lola Tarr of Jackson, NJ and Sophie Tarr of Guam. Nephews Valentine Tarr and wife Amy of Jackson, NJ, Commander Steven Tarr Jr of US Navy and wife Mary from Guam, Alex Chorba of Pasadena, CA, Lincoln Tarr of Jackson, NJ, Jackson Tarr of Jackson, NJ and John Tarr of Guam. Pallbearers will be members of the St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Grayson County Home Hospice, St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Mary’s Catholic School or charity of your choice. The family of George wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the members of the Grayson County Home Hospice for their dedicated care of George in his last days especially Toni, Alexis and the chaplain Dennis. Thanks to the support of members of St. Mary’s Parish especially Father Tony Aureus and the Eucharistic ministers that came to see George when he was homebound.
