Obituary For Helen Ritchie

Helen "Honey" Frances Huffman Ritchie, 94, who died Sunday, May 29, 2016, was born March 16, 1922, in Tioga, Texas, to John Valentine Huffman and Edna Vera (Self) Huffman. She graduated from Collinsville High School and was working in Sherman when she met her future husband. Helen married Clifford Raymond Ritchie on September 18, 1942, in McKinney, Texas and they celebrated 44 years of marriage before his death in 1986. Their first child, John Raymond Ritchie, died when he was 21 months old and they were blessed with two more children, Celia Frances and Joe David Ritchie. Helen, who was affectionately called "Honey" by her family and friends, retired from the Sherman Independent School District as cafeteria manager. After her retirement, she was active in the local community by serving as a Grayson County Election Judge, was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Triple L and Golden Agers Clubs, and the Sundowners Home Demonstration Club where she enjoyed working with needlework, quilting, and various craft projects. Helen was a devoted member of the North Park Baptist Church since 1954. Helen was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy Schussler and Callie Riley; and grandson, Christopher Ryan Ritchie. Helen is survived by her children, Fran Roberts and husband Jerry of Benbrook, TX, and Joe Ritchie and wife, Glenda of Denison, TX; step-daughter, Karen Barrington of Lubbock, TX; grandchildren: Richard Vardy (Michaele), Kathryn Lincoln (Steve), Emily Deeb (Sammie), Jeff Roberts, Nealey Haynes (Brian), Kate Reach (Jesse); seven great-grandchildren; brother, John Huffman of Edmond, OK; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Her celebration of life will be held on Thursday, June 2nd, at 2:00 p.m. at North Park Baptist Church in Sherman, Texas. Pastor David Murphy will officiate. Burial will follow at West Hill Cemetery. A family visitation will be held at the church prior to the service starting at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Richard Vardy, Jeff Roberts, Brian Haynes, Jesse Reach, Phillip Deeb and Thomas Deeb. The family deeply appreciates the excellent love and care she received from Judy McDowell and Jaime Ferguson, caregivers, Home Hospice of Grayson County and the staff at Crawford Street Place.     I'll always remember Mrs. Ritchie at the end of the Piner Jr. High cafeteria line, and later, when I was in high school, I think she moved to the Sherman High cafeteria.
