Obituary For Herbert Holmes

Services for Herbert W. Holmes, who passed away on March 13, 2014 at Texoma Medical Center, will be held on Monday March 17, 2014 at Dannel Funeral Home at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Denison, Texas. Herbert was born on April 16, 1914 to Agnes Pickens and Fred Holmes on the family farm in Scott Township, Madison County, Winterset, Iowa. Herbert attended school at Lincoln County School. He remembers the highlight of school was having to walk to and from school. Herbert graduated from Lincoln School in the eighth grade in 1927 and started high school at Winterset High graduating in 1931. During Herbert’s younger years, he worked on the family farm, worked at the Winterset Creamery. In 1935 he left the creamery to attended college at Iowa State College. Herbert married Jewel Brashear Holmes on April 16, 1939 in Ambler, Pennsylvania. He moved to Texas from Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1947. He was employed by Hertz Rent-A-Car for almost 12 years. He also worked at Denison Wal-Mart as a greeter for 14 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ft. Worth, Texas where he was confirmed and joined Trinity Lutheran Church when he moved to Sherman. Herbert was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel, brother Gene Holmes, sister Helen Drake, and Lucille Gray. He is survived by his daughter Sabra Kay Maddock of Sherman, brother Mike Holmes of Winterset, Iowa, sister Margie Emerson of Winterset, Iowa. He has 2 grandchildren, Thomas Jason Wofford and Brody James Wofford, 2 great-great grandchildren, Jansen Landry Wofford and Ryder James Wofford; stepson Charles Albert Benson of California.
