Obituary For Herman L. Andrews

After a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's Disease, Andy Andrews left this life on September 8, 2015, at his home in Sherman, at the age of 84. A memorial service will be held at Dannel Funeral Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2015. Andy was born on December 23, 1930, in Rural Shade, Texas, to Celia and Alvie Lee Andrews. After growing up and attending schools in Trinidad and Malakoff, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Parks Air Force Base in Pleasanton, California. During the Korean War, he was stationed in Seoul, Korea, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant, and later served a tour of duty in the Philippine Islands. In 1952, he met a fellow airman, Elspia Ann Binkley, and they were married on New Year's Day 1953, by the Air Force Chaplain in the base chapel. They were parents to two daughters, Shelley and Laura. After leaving the Air Force, Andy moved his family to Dallas while working for Hauserman Brothers Construction Company, and he traveled throughout the U.S. during various construction jobs. In 1964, he accepted a position with Texas Instruments in Dallas, eventually transferring to Sherman. He retired in 1993, as Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. After his wife's death, Andy married Marilyn Tuttle VanHooser, in 1994, in Sherman. Not wanting to be completely retired, he started his small construction business and remodeled many homes in the area, as well as doing handyman jobs for friends and customers. His true passion was woodworking and carpentry, and he continued to work until his health would no longer allow him to do so. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sherman. Andy was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marvene Robinette. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of the home, daughter Shelley Springston, of Dallas, daughter and son-in-law Laura and Matt Matura, of Dallas, grandson Andy Matura, brother Kenneth Andrews and wife Mary, of Scurry, TX, brother Ray Andrews and wife Lokie, of Scurry, TX, stepson Steve VanHooser and wife Holly, of Flower Mound, TX, stepdaughter Susan Schleck and husband Bryan, of Austin, TX, step-grandson William Schleck, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Andy is also survived by his constant and loyal dachshund companion, Gracie, who never left his side until the very end. Special thanks go to Home Hospice of Grayson County, Ed and Karen Bingham, Mary Walters, and Joyce Richardson. These caring and kind people took care of Andy with love and respect, and made it possible for him to remain at home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Hospice of Grayson County at 505 W. Center St., Sherman, TX 75090, the Lewy Body Dementia Association at 912 Killian Hill Rd. SW, Lilburn, GA 30047, or to the Texoma Dachshund Rescue Group.
