Obituary For Holmes Nichols
Holmes Lee 'Nick' Nichols, 91, of Denison, went home to the Lord on Monday, July 6, 2015. His family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 9th, at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman. Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 Friday morning, July 10th, in the Chapel on the Hill at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Holmes Lee was born September 9, 1923, in Wheatland, Oklahoma to Henry Holmes and Lela Hurst Nichols. He graduated from Denison High School in 1943, and then on September 5th of that same year married Opal Marie Forrest. They relocated to Fort Worth, for employment with Consolidated Aircraft Factory where Holmes worked on the assembly team building B-24 bombers. Eventually, Holmes secured the position of Lineman for Texas Power & Light (which later became Oncor). He was promoted from lineman to dispatcher, retiring in 1985, with over 40 years of service with TP&L. Holmes Lee was extremely proud of his achievement to 32nd degree Mason-Scottish Rite. He was a member - and past Master - of the Travis Street Lodge #117, and had served in a myriad of offices throughout District 4A. He was honored by the membership with a Golden Trowel Award and a Lifetime Membership. Holmes Lee was a member, and deacon, of Central Christian Church in Sherman, and had served for 19 consecutive years as youth counselor at the Christian Youth Camp in Athens, TX. In later years Holmes Lee served the community as part of the volunteer auxiliary at both Medical Plaza and Wilson N. Jones hospitals. Holmes Lee never met a stranger. He set a great example for others to follow. His morals and values have been passed on to his children. He loved genuinely, cared passionately, and gave to all loyally. He will be greatly missed by all family and friends, but never forgotten. We Love You, Pop! Preceded in death by his parents, son Donald Lee Nichols, brother Donald James Nichols, and sister Mina Bernice Nichols, Holmes Lee is survived by his loving wife Opal Marie, of Denison; his son, James H. Nichols and wife Victoria, of Van Alstyne; grandson Brian K. Nichols, of Sherman; granddaughters, Khristy M. Nichols, of Sherman, and Alicia R. Nichols, of Van Alstyne; great-grandsons Austin Nichols, Travis Nichols, Hunter Pokorny, Houston Pokorny and Jared Taylor; former daughters-in-law Linda Rucker and Debra Nichols. In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored by memorial donations to medical research via either the Myasthenia Gravis Association, at www.myasthenia.org or the ALS Foundation (Lou Gehrig's Disease), at www.alsa.org.
