Obituaries

Howard L. Smith, Jr., 92, of Sherman, Texas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 13, 2023. A memorial service honoring Howard will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Western Heights Church of Christ in Sherman. Richey Rivers and Rusty Sherry will officiate. A reception will be held following the service at the church. Anyone who wishes to pay their final respects to Howard may do so at Dannel Funeral Home on Thursday from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM, also, on Friday, from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM.

Howard was born on July 1, 1930 in Alamo, Texas to Howard, Sr. and Annamay Smith. He married Bonnie Hestand on March 9, 1957, in Sherman, Texas and there they settled to raise their only child, Sylvia. Howard was a member of Western Heights Church of Christ, where he served many years as an elder. Howard was a proud graduate of The University of Texas with a degree in civil engineering. He worked many years for the Texas Department of Transportation, where he retired as Grayson County resident engineer in 1993.

He enjoyed watercolor, snow skiing, and supporting every activity in which his grandchildren participated. He was a student of the Spanish language, being dedicated to mission work in Ecuador for many years.

He is survived by his brother, Garry of Salado; daughter, Sylvia and husband, Richey of Sherman; grandson, Elliot and wife, Jessica and great-grandson, Finn of Thornton, CO; granddaughter, Emily and wife, Whitney and great-granddaughter, Olivia of Fort Worth; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Lucile, and his wife.
