James Paul Brown passed away on Monday May 16 2011 in Sherman Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home. Services will be held Wednesday May 18 2011 at 11 a.m. in West Hill Cemetery with Reverend Tom Peel of First United Methodist Church Officiating. Visitation for the family will be Tuesday May 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home. James was born on July 9 1927 in Conehatta Mississippi to Tim Brown and Lela Mercer Brown. He grew up on a farm raising cows and growing cotton and vegetables. After his father died working for the railroad when he was five his grandparents raised him. One day when he was little he planted some peas in a hurrybut he learned from the measly clumps that later grew up that he would have to plant better next time. His lesson learned he continued to work on the farm until 1945 when he enlisted in the army. He served at the end of WWII and in Korea when he received the Purple Heart. He was the only survivor of 100 men in his unit at Heartbreak Ridge. Upon returning home to Mississippi he built bridges and eventually became a truck driver. He later met his wife Jennie Cooney and married her on December 23 1978 in Arcadia Park Texas. Surviving him are his wife Jennie, his son Mike Stone and wife Marlys of Frisco, and his son Paul Stone and wife Waynette of McKinney. He also has 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. His parents Tim Brown and Lela Mercer Brown and his sister Lena Rivers Smith preceded him in death.
