Col. James J. Welch, US Army Chaplain, died peacefully surrounded by his family, at his home on Thanksgiving, November 22, 2018. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church in Sherman, Texas. Rev. Chris Dowd of FUMC Sherman will officiate. There will be a reception in Binkley Hall following the service. Jim’s ashes will be interred at the Wallen Family Cemetery near Grove, Oklahoma at a later date. Jim was born in Buffalo, New York on May 24, 1946 to Emma and James Welch. The family moved to El Paso, Texas in 1954. Jim met the love of his life, Andrea Wallen, and they were married in 1967 in El Paso. Jim and Andrea moved to Dallas, where Jim attended Perkins School of Theology at SMU. In 1971 they returned to El Paso where Jim received his first appointment as a pastor in the New Mexico Conference of the UMC. He soon joined the US Army Reserve as a Chaplain. In 1985, with their three children, Jim went on active duty in San Antonio at Ft. Sam Houston. Over the ensuing years they served four more military assignments before retiring in Sherman, Texas, to be near to their children and grandchildren. Col. Welch served a total of 33 years in the US Army. In addition to the military responsibilities he also served 19 appointments wherever he was called in the United Methodist Church over 47 years. Jim’s passions were God, Family, and Country as evidenced by his actions. He loved college football and basketball, and sometimes the Dallas Cowboys. He loved his word search and crossword puzzles, and the books that Andrea approved for him. He loved to travel with his wife over their 51 years of marriage to visit friends, relatives, and national parks. Jim is survived by his wife, Andrea; son, Brian Welch and wife Brittani of Sherman; 2 daughters: Kelley Shepard and husband Michael of Sherman, and Jennifer Smith and husband Scott of Eden Prairie, MN; brother, Patrick Welch and wife Carol of Albuquerque, NM; sister, Kathy Wafer and husband David of Arlington, TX; 7 grandchildren: Haley and Matthew Shepard, Ashleigh and Skyler Smith, Riley, Charish, and Ashton Welch; and countless other relatives and friends from all over the country. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Maryann Richardson. You may sign the online guestbook at www.Dannelfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to First Methodist Sherman.

My love is with your entire family. Having known "Lefty" since childhood in Grace United Methodist Church and at Bel Air High School in El Paso, his passing came as a big shock. He was a wonderful person, open and caring and quick to help others. All of his friends from Bel Air are mourning, along with all of you. We will miss him GREATLY.

To the family of James Welch
My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
It seems so unfair that death should have the power to take someone you love.
When it happens the thought of never being able to talk to laugh with or being able to hold again can be difficult to bear.
This pain is not necessarily erased by being told that your loved ones up in heaven.
The Bible however gives us hope.
In John 5:28;29.
We find that those who are in the memorial tombs will hear his voice (Jesus)and come out to a resurrection of live and live in a paradise earth, with or without any more death, evil or sorrows..
Our love God Jehovah's through his son Jesus gives us this hope.
Sincerely
Jana Carles

Chaplain Jim Welch was a mentor to dozens of younger chaplains during his Army career. I am one of those who were blessed to be mentored under his leadership. I am now a Tyson chaplain too and will miss him here. Jim, I'll see you on the other side. May the Lord comfort your loved ones as they mourn your passing.

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. I worked with "The Colonel" at TCOG. We shared many military stories and sayings. We saluted each other every morning and then again as we left every evening. He was a devoted husband and dedicated Christian man who I looked up to and asked for advice. He will be missed by many. RIP Colonel.

Sending prayers for your comfort. I stand with you in this time of grief.
Wonderful memories of Jim's laughter and smile at "Birthday Group" gatherings.
But mostly remember his advice and council at Morrow First. Love from the Georgia "family."
