Obituary For John Hudgins
J ohn Scott Hudgins died June 9, 2018 in Charleston, West Virginia. A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sherman, Texas on July 7 at 10 a.m. John was born in Sherman on February 19, 1959 to Lee and Nancy Easley Hudgins. A graduate of Sherman High School, he studied theoretical physics at the University of Texas. As an adult, he studied history, philosophy, and political science at Austin College. John married Kelly Lea Cuppy on November 17, 1984 in Sherman at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Though their marriage took them to homes in Colorado, Oregon, and West Virginia, John always called Texas home. Throughout his life, he worked as a rancher and developed oil and gas properties throughout North Texas. John loved open prairie, the ocean, wordplay, music, art, old buildings, and primary sources. He took pride in his family’s heritage and their stewardship of the land. He was a voracious reader, a brilliant and creative thinker, and a lifelong learner. All who knew him appreciated his integrity, kindness, generous spirit, and wicked wit. He was fiercely loyal to and deeply grateful for his friends, many of whom he had known since early childhood. John was born to be a father. As is often the case with truly good people, children were naturally drawn to him. He was devoted to his daughter Anna Elizabeth and loved his small family unconditionally. John is survived by his wife Kelly and their daughter Anna of Sherman, Texas and Charleston, West Virginia; brother and sister-in-law Pete and Kimberly Hudgins, also of Sherman; sister and brother-in-law Nan and Chris Morrow of Plano, Texas; niece Katherine Morrow Quiniola; nephews Peter Alexander Hudgins, Nathan Scott Morrow, John Andrew Hudgins, Benjamin Blake Hudgins, and John Louis Bibb; great-niece Eleanor Judith Quiniola; and many cousins. He will be deeply mourned by his “chosen family,” whose number is too great to list. Those who truly knew John will remember his deep love of knowledge and dislike of overt displays. In lieu of flowers, consider honoring John’s memory with a gift to the 529 College Savings Plan recently established at T. Rowe Price for Anna by dear family friends Jeffrey Ward and Michael Klein.
