Obituary For John Scott Rogers

A graveside service for John Scott Rogers, of Gunter, Texas, will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Van Alstyne Cemetery. Pastor Leland Samuelson will officiate.

John Scott was born to Winfield Scott and Janice Rogers in Sherman, Texas on October 6, 1938. He was raised in Gunter and attended Gunter schools. John Scott felt called to be in the funeral industry and attended Dallas Institute of Funeral Service where he obtained his mortuary degree. He worked in several funeral homes and spent the majority of his career working at Sparkman Hillcrest in Dallas, Texas for over 40 years. John Scott served countless families in their times of need and he was an extremely compassionate funeral director. He was very meticulous in every detail and methodical with every funeral he had the privilege of directing. He is a selfless man who put others needs before his own. That was the way John Scott will be remembered by his numerous friends, work colleagues, families he served, and his family.

John Scott was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Morris Rogers and sister, Sandra Rogers Harlan. He is survived by his partner, William (Bill) Kaylor, of Gunter; 4 nephews: Mark Rogers, Doug Rogers and wife Cindy of Tioga, EV Harlan and wife Kerry of Bells, and Scott Harlan and fiancé Carin Purdom of Sherman; and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Texas Shriners Hospital.

I always loved when John Scott would come to Ohio with Uncle Bill, it was a special treat. He was like another uncle to me. He was so generous to my sister and I. Being young and from up north I thought his Texas accent was interesting and funny sounding at the same time. I'll forever cherish the memories we had together. Till we meet again. - Travis Fritz

John Scott Rogers was one of my favorite tax clients, when I opened a glass shop he brought me a old reference book on different types of mason jars and we had the biggest time going through that book and finding jars in my shop. He will be missed by all his friends that dearly loved him and I was lucky to be one of those. Rest in peace my friend, Joyce Horn

Words alone can't begin to express the sadness I feel when being made aware that John Scott has "gone to glory," as JSR would always say when death would come to any living thing. John Scott has always been like a brother in law to me, and he always treated me like a little sister. The never-ending love, and compassion that he always showed my brother will be a treasured, and lasting memory of mine. My family and I will always treasure the memories that John Scott helped to create as a part of our relationship with him. May the Lord hold him forever in his loving arms until we meet again in his glorious kingdom. With deepest love and sympathy to his family, Susan (Kaylor) Fritz

My funest memory is spending Halloween in his appartment which was on the second floor of Jack Schmitz and Sons Funeral Home in Denton, Texas in the 60's. Talk about spooky - lots of open caskets. We enjoyed his many tales of being a morticion. I also remember making eggs benedict for 10 at his home in th 70's. I must have been crazy to attempt that. Many fond memories. Loved him dearly. Marsha and Lindsay Keffer

These two beautiful mares were sold to my family from Dr. Murphy Bounds Ranch. They were two pure bred quarter horses sired by Murphys Peppy Olena. I had the pleasure to be introduced to Dr. Bounds and his wife through JSR and Bill Kaylor. I enjoyed my time I got to spend with them all. I also got to hear some fascinating stories shared of Dr. Bounds years as a practioner from JSR. It was a lovely trip to Texas from Ohio. This are just one of the many memories I have of John Scott. I love you so much JSR and I miss you terribly.

There are so many memories to share about JSR. His longtime partner and best friend William Kaylor had been in my life since the time I was born as well as my brothers. Bill Kaylor's sister, my mother, Susan Katherine Fritz are very close to one another even though they all live very far away from with Bill and JSR residing in Texas while Susan resides in Ohio. Every year Uncle John Scott and Uncle Bill Kaylor would travel to Ohio and spend two or three weeks with my mom, dad, brother, grandparents and myself. During their summer visits they would stay in trailer lots 1008 and 1009 owned by Bill Kaylor's parents, my grandma and grandpa, Ron and Sally Kaylor at the Springwood Lake Camp Club in East Sparta, Ohio. It was the families getaway during the months between April through November 1st in the land of the Buckeyes. There were so many fun times we all had together staying at this place. The camp ground offered so many things to do like swimming, riding your bikes, weekend concerts and events held for the campers in the Springwood community, campfire cooking, ice cream and tasty foods you could buy at the Lodges concession stand, bingo nights, Sunday Church, fishing, and riding your golf cart anywhere on the premises. I learned so many life lessons while growing up at this place. Uncle Bill and Uncle JSR, during the summers they would come to visit, helped me learn to ride my first bike, taught me how to swim and dive in the huge outdoor pool at the Springwood Lodge. They taught me how to drive the golf cart, how to make a good campfire, how to cook over the fire, and so many others. I could go on and on. One specific memory that always stands out to me specifically with JSR is when I was between the ages of twelve and thirteen years old he took me to the Cleveland Ohio Arts Museum and Botanical Garden. John Scott had a passion for the arts, music, and history. On that particular day he took me they were showcasing the Russian Romanov's

The other photos show my husband, Daniel Robert Davidson, my daughter Katarina Noelle Davidson who was one at the time, John Scott, Uncle Bill and myself. I was pregnant at the time with my son Ivan Daniel Davidson. These were taken in November 2019. My husband and I were returning to Tulare, California from visiting my in-laws and niece in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We drove back stopping in Sherman, Texas to have dinner with JSR and Uncle Bill at Red Lobster. There was good food and good conversation that night.
