Obituary For Joseph Clendenin

A Celebration of the Life of Joseph Chesley Clendenin will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2017, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sherman, Texas with Reverend Lisa Juica Perkins officiating. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall following the service. The family will greet friends on Sunday, June 18 from 3:00 until 5:00pm at Dannel Funeral Home. “Big” Joe was born February 21, 1985, in Austin, Texas, shortly after his twin- sister Maggie, the son of Margaret and David Clendenin. Joe died Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Wilson N. Jones Hospital. He attended Crutchfield and Fairview Elementary, Dillingham Intermediate, and Piner Middle School, and he graduated from Sherman High School in 2004. Along the way, Joe made countless friends and brightened every classroom he entered. While in school, Joe also loved participating in bowling with the Special Olympics. In 1994, Joe met and befriended Pat Jones, father of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, while Joe and Pat rehabilitated following surgery in a Dallas-area hospital. That meeting started a lifelong friendship between Joe, Pat, and Jerry. Through the years, Joe was blessed to meet many of his favorite Cowboys football players, and they were blessed to meet him. Joe’s favorite memories were of travelling to Cowboys training camp in Oxnard California, San Antonio, Wichita Falls, and Austin with his family, chatting with his friend Jerry on the field, and evaluating the football players for the upcoming seasons. He also treasured the memories from his trips to Disneyworld with his family. Joe also loved spending Sunday afternoons during football season with his friends Darren Tankersley, Jason Sofey, and Shawn Davis. While Joe never held an unkind thought against anyone he knew, he occasionally made an exception for the players of the Philadelphia Eagles. During the football offseason, Joe enjoyed accompanying his mom on movie-nights and on trips to see Carrie Underwood in concert. He could often be found lounging in his pool, wearing his sunglasses. His friend and dog Josie faithfully followed Joe everywhere. Joe was also a proud uncle to his nephew Owen and enjoyed travelling to Austin to visit him. Owen loved his uncle and cherished the time he spent with Joe. The family would like to express their appreciation to the doctors and nurses of neonatal unit of the Seton Medical Center of Austin where Joe entered this world and the staff at the medical intensive care unit at Wilson N. Jones where he left this world. Joe asked for little but received much in return. His relentless spirit and joy served as an inspiration to everyone who met him, and they will continue to serve as a reminder for his friends and family to appreciate every blessing, Big and small. Joe is survived by his mom, dad, twin-sister Maggie, brother Jay, sister-in-law Amy, nephew Owen, and his paternal grandmother Lucile “Memaw” Clendenin. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother Bette “Meme” Thompson and his namesakes, maternal grandfather Joe Sidney Thompson and paternal grandfather Carl Chesley Clendenin. Pallbearers will be Bret Clark, Steve Ferguson, Jason Sofey, Darren Tankersley, Shawn Davis, Todd Vaughan, and Nick Engelke. In lieu of flowers, memorials honoring Joe can be given to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children or Seton Medical Center of Austin.

October 15, 2017 Meg and Family, We did not know Joe passed away! I cannot even express how sorry we are for your loss! It was such a privilege to teach him in fifth grade at Dillingham and of course you know how David enjoyed having him at Crutchfield too. I will never forget our Social Studies time together and how much Joe enjoyed studying the states! He loved taking on that challenge and he mastered it. I still have the video of him taking that test and how excited he got when he made 100! Those were such special times and I will always treasure my time with Joe and Maggie! Please know how very, very sorry we are and how much we loved Joe. ~ Paula and David Parker, Sherman, Texas
