Personal reflection by cousin, Wayne Thomas: My cousin and cousin-in-law Anne and Lloyd Miller, who were more like aunt and uncle to us, devoted their lives to seeing that their son was well taken care of. Anne was always elegant and welcoming. As she faced her last days her main concern was her son. She and Lloyd were pioneers in the movement to educate the developmentally challenged and to integrate them into society. When it became clear their son faced difficulties they found one of the few facilities in the country that took education of the developmentally challenged seriously. They continued to find more and better training and help for their son. They led in the founding of the first group home for the developmentally challenged in Texas and organized support for the legislation that legalized and protected group homes from prejudiced and ignorant neighbors. She and Lloyd had an active social life and they made sure their son was able to fit-in whether at dinner parties, the Dallas ballet or resorts around the world. Because of their kind but firm attention, wherever they were able to go, Mitch was able to go. When Lloyd passed away, Anne married a fine man Hal Clark to whom she was married 19 years until his passing. Hal was a devoted husband but before they were joined in matrimony, Anne made sure that he would also be a devoted step-father to Mitch, which he was. I cannot imagine a better mother for her son.

Anne and Lloyd were dear friends since 1980 when they pioneered group homes for developmentally disabled by purchasing in Dallas the first group home in Texas. Their love for all grew to include many safe group homes throughout the state. What a legacy! What a blessing Anne's life is. ~ Susan Cooper, Dallas, Texas
