Louise Hicks Street of Sherman a retired high school English teacher who as a college freshman played for what would become the greatest women"¢s basketball team in U.S. history died Monday October 21st at her home after a long illness. She was 84. She was a devoted partner in her marriage a loving mother a gracious contributor to the Austin College community a dedicated teacher to her students and a stunning beauty. A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Friday October 25th at Grand Avenue Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lander Bethel officiating. Burial will be in Dickens Texas. Born January 27 1929 in Plainview to the Rev. Alvis and Ethel Basham Hicks Louise graduated from Higgins High School in the northeast corner of the Texas Panhandle. She attended what was then Wayland Baptist College and played guard in the beginning year of a legendary team known as the Flying Queens that posted 131 consecutive wins in the 1950s a record that still stands. In 1948 when she was 19 she left Wayland with an associate of arts degree and began teaching and coaching girls"¢ basketball in Dickens east of Lubbock. In Dickens she met her husband Kenneth W. Street a Dickens native who graduated from then Texas Technological College ââ?¬" later renamed Texas Tech University ââ?¬" and would become a government professor at Austin College. After their marriage July 31 1950 in a ceremony performed by her father in Kerrville they taught together in Pettit west of Lubbock. Mrs. Street attended West Texas State College and Texas Tech. She lived in Austin while her husband attended the University of Texas to earn his doctorate and came to Sherman when he joined the Austin College faculty in 1959. She worked for the college in several positions including the admissions office and in 1974 earned her bachelor of arts from AC. She began teaching English at Sherman High School in 1984. She loved teaching so much she returned to the classroom after her "official" retirement from Sherman High School in 1996. Her students loved her and she them. Mrs. Street was active in the Austin College Campus Club. She also served on the board of Community Series in Sherman. Survivors include her husband, a daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Bill Rushing of Orlando Fla., a son Kenneth Gregory Street of Sherman, two grandchildren Blake Rushing of Dallas and Kenneth Rushing of Orlando, a sister Alice Scarborough of Abilene, a sister-in-law Jenny Hicks of Abilene, several nieces and nephews. Her parents her brother Claude Hicks and her sister Marie Stockard predeceased her. The family expresses special appreciation and gratitude to Home Hospice of Grayson County and to four devoted caregivers: Joanne Evans Mary Walters Sheryl McKinney and Rose Finley.
