Obituary For Marjorie Montene Elliott
Marjorie Montene Elliott, age 88, entered the next phase of her eternal life with our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus on the afternoon of Tuesday May 28, 2019, at her home in Sherman, Texas. A Memorial / Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, August 31, 2019, at Dannel Funeral Home, 302 South Walnut Street in Sherman.
Marjorie was born August 30, 1930, in Bradford, Arkansas, to Loyd Otis and Nellie (Boyce) Lewis. As a young girl she moved to Mulhall, Oklahoma and later to Oklahoma City with her family. On July 29, 1946, she married Barney Leno “Red” Elliott at McKee Methodist Chapel in Oklahoma City. Marjorie and her husband Red were longtime residents of Seminole, Oklahoma.
In 1971 Marjorie enrolled in Seminole Junior College in Oklahoma. Two years later she obtained her first driver’s license at the age of 43. After transferring to East Central University in Ada, she earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling. Upon completion of her Student Teaching, she was hired in 1977 by New Lima Public Schools in Oklahoma where she taught Kindergarten until her retirement on June 1, 1995.
In December 2009, Marjorie and her husband moved to Southmayd, Texas where Red died on February 1, 2010. They had been married for 63 years. Marjorie moved to her residence in Sherman the following year. She enjoyed attending church with both her daughters, Maxine Thomas at Victory Life in Sherman and Amanda Pepe at New Beginnings Fellowship in Howe, where Marjorie was water baptized. Due to the onset of Alzheimer’s, she would once again accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior each time she heard a call to salvation. Witnessing this brought great comfort and joy to her family.
Marjorie had an inquisitive mind and was an avid reader. She enjoyed reading books about places and cultures she had never traveled to or experienced. She also liked to watch documentaries, as well as the History Channel and American Ninja Warrior. Marjorie’s many joys included working crossword puzzles, sewing, taking walks, traveling, family reunions, cooking for her family and canning (of which the family favorite was her Plum Jelly).
Marjorie also made many desserts, including Cherry Icebox Pies, Pumpkin Bread, Coconut Bon-bons, Orange Gelatin Salad and Date-nut Roll. The family favorite was her famous Grandma Cookies, a special Oatmeal Raisin Cookie that she perfected and made her own. These cookies she baked by the dozens to share with her children and grandchildren when they came to visit. Gifted with a beautiful singing voice, Marjorie rarely was found to be working without singing. This was one of her passions, and she loved to sing songs with her family. She was the fan of many musical genres, and two favorite tunes she sang to her children were “Lavender Blue” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” She was the most kind, loving, nurturing, gracious and caring woman you could ever meet. For Marjorie, living life and being with her family as often as possible was most important to her. She devoted her life to raising her children and teaching other children.
Marjorie loved unconditionally all of her family and friends and is survived by her daughter Maxine Thomas of the home; son Steve and wife Patricia Elliott of Southmayd, Texas; daughter Barbara and husband Michael Williams of Waynesville, Missouri; son Perry Elliott of Claremore, Oklahoma; daughter Amanda and husband Daniel Pepe of the home; sister Linda Powell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Uncle Harold and wife Lula Boyce of Bradford, Arkansas; 16 Grandchildren, 17 Great-Grandchildren, 1 Great-Great-Grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews, plus a vast number of extended family and friends.
Marjorie was preceded in death by parents Loyd & Nellie Lewis, husband “Red” Elliott, son-in-law Preston Thomas, brother Carlos Lewis, and sister Vada (Lewis) Hamilton Flowers.
The family requests memorial donations to the non-profit organization Home Hospice, 302 West Center Street, Sherman, Texas 75090, which provided outstanding hospice care for Marjorie during her last days on this earth. The family would like to extend their profound gratitude and appreciation to Home Hospice for their loving support and care.
