Obituary For Martha Sue Phipps

Martha Sue Hopper Phipps, age 90, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home March 28th from cancer. She was born January 11, 1933 in Sherman, Texas to Jack T. and Lillian McClendon Massingale. Martha was a 1951 graduate of Sherman High School and married her high school sweetheart Billy G. Hopper on July 6, 1951. They had one daughter, Valorie. They lived in Sherman until Billy was transferred with IBM to Austin in the mid 70’s, settling in Georgetown, Texas. Billy Hopper died in 1986. Martha married Robert E. Phipps a few years later.

Martha was an avid tennis player, starting with playing on the Sherman High School tennis team and continued to play throughout her life until her mid 60’s. Volunteering was another love. She volunteered at the Georgetown Hospital’s Gift Shop for 26 years, including serving as the shop manager and served multiple years as President of the Hospital’s Women’s Auxiliary. She also was a volunteer at the Georgetown Caring Place until she became ill.

Martha is preceded in death by their father and mother, husband Billy G. Hopper, husband Robert E. Phipps, sisters Jeraline Lehman and Mary Carr, and nephews Phillip B. Porter and Billy Dale Carr.

Martha is survived by her daughter Valorie Hopper Russell and son-in law Will Russell, grandchildren Bryan Taylor and wife Lorrie, Tiffany Guinan and husband Ben, and Whitney Stabile and husband Joel, 7 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Arrangements have been made by Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman for a graveside service, Wednesday, April 5, at 10:00am at Cedarlawn Memorial Park, 5805 Texoma Parkway, in Sherman.
