Obituary For Mary Kathryn Mitchell

Mary Kathryn Mitchell died peacefully at home in Lindsay, Oklahoma on March 22, 2023. She was 99 years of age.

Mary was born in Tampa, Florida on February 4, 1924, the daughter of Phillip Butler Turpin and Phoebe Palmer Turpin. Mary married John Dewey Mitchell of Sherman, Texas on September 19, 1943. They lived in Florida, California, then settled in Denison, Texas, where they raised a family of five children. Mary was a dedicated mother; also caring for several children of working mothers in later years. She loved nature, which was a recurring theme in her poetry writing. Mary was a woman of faith and was an active member of the Church of God (WCG, UCG, and CGI). She lovingly taught her children about God, His Son, Jesus, and His way. She also spent many hours writing the story of her life for her children and grandchildren to enjoy.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Phoebe Turpin; her husband, John D. Mitchell, two sons, Phillip Mitchell and Leslie Mitchell, two daughters, Maureen Mitchell and Margaret Montague; and grandson, Bryan J. Mitchell. She is survived by her eldest son, John D. Mitchell, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Barbara, her daughter, Gloria M. Miller and son-in-law, Ted. 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Services for Mary Mitchell, formerly of Sherman, will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, in the Dannel Funeral Home Chapel in Sherman, Texas, at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow the service at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman. Pastor Andy Burnett of The Church of God in Sherman will officiate. There will be a reception following the interment at Joshua's Crossing, 7201 FM 691, Denison, TX.
