My name is Patti LaRocco Haynes. I want to Express My Deep Condolences for for your loss of Smitty. [Thats what we called him as kids]. My family owned the Little Italian restaurant a couple buildings fown from Hilltop grocery store. Smitty was the Best, he always looked after us kids in and out of the store. My brother Nick and I were cleaning the restaurant one dsy, snd got into the wine. I guess we were in Jr. High school. I was playing like I was a waitress and started pouring wine. Well someone had to drink it. I was getting pretty tipsy. My brother told me to stop. I wouldn't and he started after me. I ran outside. Headed straight for the highway. A 18 Wheeler was head right for me. Smitty saw me and ran to rescue me. I owe him Big Time. GOD Bless Him. I will be praying for you and your family in this saddness. Love/ Patti

Alice and Penny, As I sit here tonight thinking back as a girl growing up in Harker Heights. Roy was an everyday fixture in my life, I grew up and am still best friends with Charlotte. Besides being friends with Charlotte I shopped a lot at Hilltop. So Roy always kept an eye on me as I visited the store and would tell me to read my list of things my mom has sent me to get for her. Her list always had an old pack of cigarettes on it and he would poke at me and say now you better not be smoking these things with a smile. I would say no Sr they are for my mom. He had that way of making you feel safe. Lots of time he would watch as I walked through the field in the back of the store headed to my house. He would alway give a wave as I got close to my house. In our day it was no big deal to walk to the store and home I was just so young around 6 or 7 then. Roy did those kind of things with lots of us kids. He was such a sweet man I always had high regard for him. As I got older I would help do the inventory of the store and that is really when I got to know Roy. I think he must have known everyone in Harker Height. He would laugh and cut up with everyone. It's funny how sweet memories come back when you lose someone. I'm just sorry we lost touch. Facebook is great for connecting old friends. I am praying for strength and comfort for you and Penny in the days weeks and months ahead. Sending big hugs Always, Linda Taylor
