Obituary For Nancy McKinney

Nancy Foreman McKinney- December 7, 2017 Born in Waterloo, Ontario on January 26,1923 to Clarence and Helen Foreman, Nancy grew up with her younger brother, John, and her parents in London Ontario, where her father was archdeacon of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. She graduated from Havergal College in Toronto and received her B.A. from the University of Western Ontario. At Western she was on the diving team and belonged to Pi Beta Phi sorority, a strong affiliation throughout her life. Summers were spent in a hand-built cottage in the Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, where she met Ben McKinney as a teenager. Years later, a dramatic, whirlwind wartime courtship culminated in a 1944 marriage during a brief medical leave that Ben had while recovering from injuries sustained at Anzio. After the war Ben and Nancy lived in Denison, Texas, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Little Rock Arkansas while Ben pursued his engineering career and Nancy raised their children Whitney, Heather and Mark. In 1952 Ben was called back to naval service for the Korean War and Nancy spent those years in San Diego with the children. After the war, Ben and Nancy moved to Toronto where Ben co-founded Beaver Engineering and Nancy had their last child, Munson. In all these places Nancy was a staunch member of the Junior League and made lifelong friends. In 1957, they moved back to Denison when Ben was asked to be the President of the Munson Realty Company. A woman of tireless energy, Nancy was a leader in the community, a contributor on numerous boards and committees including (to name just a few) the Well Baby Clinic, The Bargain Box and The TMC Development Committee. A “cradle Episcopalian”, she was an integral part of both St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Denison and Christ Church Gregory in Muskoka where she served on their altar guilds for more than 50 years. She and Ben were great companions and adventurers. For two years they lived on a sailboat, cruising the Great Lakes, the Mississippi, the southern seaboard and the Caribbean. They traveled extensively but beelined for Muskoka every summer. Everyone was drawn to Nancy’s effervescence, her vitality and the ease with which she made true friends. She was beautiful, timeless and a marvel to both friends and acquaintances. Her presence always made the party – she was the first one on the dance floor and the last to leave. Her loyalty and succor to those she loved were beyond compare. Universally she was the mother/grandmother/wife everyone wished they had had. Even in her last years which were full of pain, she rose above it to focus on others and take pleasure in their stories and accomplishments. She was rare and wondrous. Nancy is survived by three of her children- Heather (John Pomeroy), Mark (Kris), and Munson (Elizabeth Petticrew) as well as thirteen grandchildren- Mei Mei Newsome, Alice Pomeroy, Whitney Rohrer, Rebecca Shores, Isabelle Corbett, Scott McKinney, Margot Shaffer-Johnson, Reid McKinney, Hilary Sadhoo, Harrison McKinney, Anne McKinney, Malcolm McKinney and Hannah McKinney and nine great-grandchildren- Molly Newsome, Riley Newsome, Miller McKinney, Lucas McKinney, Whitney Shaffer, Dugan Shaffer, Benjamin Sadhoo, John Henry Shores, and William Rohrer. To all of us she has been a valuable role model, confidante and the light in our lives. The Family thanks Dr. Benson and Rebecca Hefton for their gentle care which kept Nancy independent to the end. Memorial services will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, Dec 12th at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Denison, Texas and later next summer at Christ Church Gregory where Nancy’s ashes will be interred next to Whitney and Ben. Rev. Don Perschall of St. Luke's Episcopal Church will officiate. Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman, Texas, has charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Ben and Nancy McKinney Scholarship at Grayson College (Denison), Christ Church Gregory (Muskoka) or Reba’s Ranch House (Denison). Dear Heather ,Mark and Munson, I read with great sadness about your Mom's passing in today's Globe and Mail. It was a lovely story of her wonderful life and the great adventures she enjoyed throughout it. My recollections go back to when we were are all about 10- 12 years old growing up in Muskoka and enjoying our summers there. I always thought it was so cool you came all the way from Texas year after year. Memories of sailing ,swimming, golf and your ever welcoming Mother when we all dropped by the cottage at pretty much anytime of day or night. There always fun times of games ( and in later years a bit of drinking ) at your cottage. Here we are some 50 plus years later and it all seems like yesterday.More recently we always enjoyed catching up with Nancy at the annual opening party at the Club in Muskoka and her recent absences have been missed. Muskoka was one of the special places in her life and where we all made our friendships so we look forward to the Memorial celebration at Christ Church Gregory. Please let us know the date. Our thoughts all with you all and your families. Sincerely, Geoff & Nancy B. ~ Geoff Browne, Toronto, Ontario

Mrs. McKinney was a special lady. I watched in awe as she worked tirelessly placing rocks at the shoreline of her Muskoka Cottage on Lake Joseph to prevent shoreline erosion.
