I just learned of Norma Fry's passing. She was a remarkable human being that truly believed and was a role model for life long learning. Before I retired from Austin College, I had the privilege—and it was certainly a privilege—of having Norma audit several of my British literature classes. She always enriched my teaching experiences as well as our students' multi-generational learning opportunities with her presence, nurturing intelligence, and marvelous wit. She, Peggy Redshaw, Jerry Lincecum and I very much enjoyed " telling our stories" together with trusting candor, inquisitiveness's, and humor. I will miss her very much but know that her spirit and example of being a dedicated role model for liberal education and community service, in the best sense of the word, will endure.. With gratitude and the fondest of memories for this enlightened, witty, and actively compassionate woman. Roger Platizky

Mrs. Fry and my mother were contemporaries and friends with similar values and goals for Sherman. Growing up, I often heard her name mentioned in our house--she and my mother served on some of the same committees and worked on some of the same things. Although I did not personally know her, I did know her husband, Bill, through his work with the Boy Scouts--of which I was a member at that time. Nothing but respect and thanks for the work they both did to improve the community..-

I just learned of Norma's death today. She was my mentor when I began my job in 1974 as aging director for the Texoma Regional Planning Commission. She was a dedicated, diplomatic, brilliant leader who taught me how to achieve career and programmatic goals in a good old boy system. Together we achieved many accomplishments including senior centers in 18 communities, nutrition programs and meals on wheels, a regional Texoma Area Paratransit System, Foster Grandparents and Retired Senior Volunteer Programs, Alzheimers and nursing home advocacy, independent living , assistive living and nursing home reform, benefits counseling, in home services, and Texas 211, just to name a few. The local welfare agency and the Texoma Area Agency on Aging programs were used as a statewide model to demonstrate cost effectiveness and coordination to impact the lives of older citizens residing in our service area, while in other areas of the state these programs competed against each other to the detriment of their citizens. Norma always had my back, even when some of the male leadership had trouble working with these two " little ladies" whether it was in city administration, county government, state legislature, or federal government. We had a great time overcoming obstacles and advocating for quality of life til the end. I have missed our partnership but I will always admire and love Norma for all she did for our community.
