Obituary For Peter James Knox

Peter James Knox was born on November 24, 1947, in Sherman, Texas, to Delmond Knox and Gladys Dybvik Knox. He spent his early years helping with the family's hamburger business, where he developed a strong work ethic and a love for connecting with people.

He graduated from Sherman High School in 1965 and remained closely connected with his classmates throughout his life. Peter especially enjoyed attending class reunions and was proud to help host his 60th reunion celebration this past November.

Following high school, Peter attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University before moving on to Austin College, where he studied accounting. He later enlisted in the United States Army, where he honorably served his country. Peter was deeply proud of his military service and carried a lifelong love for the nation he served.

Peter built a successful career working for many years locally at Johnson & Johnson in Sherman and later at Texas Instruments, where he remained until his retirement.

Beyond his professional life, Peter was widely known as a dedicated “Texas picker." For decades, he could be found at garage sales and estate sales throughout the Sherman area, always searching for hidden treasures. For nearly 30 years, he was a familiar face as a vendor at the Tin Star Field during the Round Top and Warrenton Antique Fair. Twice a year, he would arrive with a trailer full of mostly outdoor furniture, along with antiques and vintage signs. While he enjoyed selling, what meant the most to him were the friendships he built along the way. Treasure hunting wasn't just a hobby; it was his passion.

Peter was a devoted member of West Sherman Baptist Church. He faithfully attended services and lived a life grounded in his strong faith and love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He cherished his church family, enjoyed gospel and country music, and loved attending concerts.

Peter is survived by the two boys he raised Joshua Cole and Michael Cole of Sherman as well as the many people whose lives he touched throughout his journey, including extended family, lifelong friends, classmates, caregivers, coworkers, neighbors, and members of his church and community.

Despite health challenges, he remained hopeful and steadfast each day. He will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, kind and gentle spirit, and the quiet strength of a true gentleman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, and other beloved family members and close friends who now welcome him into his Heavenly home.

A service to celebrate Peter's life will be held on Friday May 1,2026, at 11:00am visitation and services beginning at 12:00pm at West Sherman Baptist Church, with burial to follow at West Hill Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home. Pastor Ricky Hargrave will officiate the service.

Pallbearers will be Billy McCoy, Henry McCoy, Joshua Cole, Michael Cole, Mike Hastings, Gerald Hope, Ken Yaryan, and Gerald Brede. Robert Allen will be honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Sherman Baptist Church or a local charity of choice in Peter's memory.

The last time I ran into Peter was at the Resale Barn. I became acquainted with him when I worked there. I considered him one of my "odd balls". One day, at work, he brought me a purple capped bullet, due to my purple hair. A few years later, the last time I ran into him, he was pretty down about life & how no one would remember him when he was gone. Well, I assured him that I would never forget him as I had a string of odd balls tattooed on my leg & then I showed him the purple bullet I had inked in on my calf, as part of the string. We shared such a great laugh over it. I'll always remember that smile.

I've known Peter my whole life. I ate hamburgers from his dad's place for years. When i opened the Lit'L Store Peter would come in and tell me all the ups and downs of the hamburger business. He was my friend and I will truly miss him.

I met Peter in 1961 when my brother James and I went to summer school in Sherman. He quickly became our friend. I met up with Peter again while working at TI. He was such a kind man. Norma Savage Hamner

Mr. Peter and I would often meet up at estate sales and church. It was obvious that Jesus was calling him home, but no matter how bad he felt he was always at church. He was such a kind man to all who knew him. I am sure that he was welcomed into heaven with open arms and, "Well done, my good and faithful servant!" Susie

I met Peter 36 years ago when he became my step-dad. At first I didn't like him, because I was 10 years old and I already had a dad. Then, I studied Peter and I watched him be a friend to my dad and even loan my dad some money. I started gaining trust and respect for him and even started calling him dad after mine passed away! He taught me how to be wise with my money and be a frugal person. He taught me how to spot antiques and find good deals at Canton or garage sales. We even stayed the night at estate sales so we could be #1 when numbers got passed out. I would always call Peter like he was Google because he was so smart. He would come by my jobsites and joke around to my guys about being with the city permit departmant or OSHA. He was so kind hearted and loved everyone he ever met and would give anything to anyone who asked. He would drive by sometimes just to see what we were up to. He would come over for family dinners, family events, our camper out at Elks lakesite, or even the Cowboys game just to hang out and show us a funny meme. He was so proud of the construction company I started, but mostly the missionary work I started doing. He loved our Lord Jesus, the USA, and the republican party! We miss him so very much and I still drive around looking for his truck to see what he is up to or getting into today! Jesus said..... "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" - John 11:25-26

I met Peter at the age of 14 years old. I worked at A&W Root Beer Stand as a carhop. One day this guy who looked like Gene Pitney pulled up in a 1965 Maroon GTO with a black top and a reverberator blasting 1960's music. I was sitting outside on the bench waiting for customers to drive up. We started talking and he was so interesting and funny. We became great friends. Pete loved garage and estate sales and in later years we hit a few together. We went to a Kelly Services Christmas Party back in the 80's, hit a few Beach Boy, Statler Brother's and Oak Ridge Boy's concerts. When I was down on my luck, Pete had a stash of groceries that he bought on sale and told me to come pick out some food. He recently bought my husband's truck from me. He was so pleased to have it. He was grateful for everything he had. He loved life and was always ready to help someone. I have so many great memories of Pete. He was my best friend all time childhood friend. We never ran out of things to talk about. I miss him already. I am thankful though that he is no longer suffering. So thankful that you made Jesus your Lord and Savior. Rest in peace my friend and know that you were loved by many.

I was blessed and honored to know Pete for my whole life! My father, Hank McCoy, and Pete were best friends in high school from the early 1960s until my Dad passed away in 1992...They had a nickname they both called each other which was "Goob". Pete was like an uncle to me and we were so glad that he felt good enough to attend our family Christmas this past year. He will be dearly missed by the entire McCoy family. It gives me great comfort and brings a smile to my face that both Pete and my Dad are able to see each other again in Heaven!!! The angels are rejoicing with another Saint being brought back home. Praise God for the life of Pete Knox! Billy McCoy

I have known Peter for 30+ years. We had buying and selling collectibles in common. He has been a vendor at our shows for 30 years. Even in the midst of cancer treatments he always stayed positive and trusting in God. He had a generous and kind heart. We will miss him but very happy that he is with God. " To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."

I met Peter in 2017 at Texoma Medical Center. I was the director of Pastoral Care, stopped by the cafeteria, and there sat Peter. We introduced ourselves and started a weekly meeting. As Interim Pastor at West Sherman Baptist Church, I rekindled the friendship. He was a faithful church member. Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night. He was a strong believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. I am richer for knowing him and poorer in that he is not here anymore. This leads to Jealousy. He was able to walk the golden streets, hand in hand with the Lord, before I did. He responded on Sunday at the time of the invitation. He came forward and said, in essence, "I pray that this church be used of God to bring people to faith in Jesus Christ." That was the heart I knew of Peter Knox. Grace and Peace be unto you, dear brother. Dr. Rickey Hargrave
