Send Flowers Redellium L. Atnip July 13, 1918 - March 16, 2014 Redellium Lindley (R. L.) Atnip of Sherman died March 16, 2014, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital -WNJ after a brief illness. R. L. was born to Bevie (B.V.) and Madeline Atnip in Sherman on July 13, 1918. He graduated from Sherman High School in 1936 and received his bachelors’ degree from Austin College in 1940. While in high school, he played the violin in the community orchestra and was active in the Boy Scouts where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. During college while running the elevator in the Commercial Building, he met the love of his life, Zerma Lea Moseley. Upon graduation from Austin College, he volunteered for the US Army in 1941. Before shipping out to North Africa, he married Zerma Lea. He was proud to be a WWII army veteran and made history for being one of the survivors of the amphibious beach head landing at Anzio in Italy on Jan. 22, 1944 which eventually liberated the Italians. Upon return from war, he started the Texas National Guard Unit in Sherman, Texas before joining the US Postal Service. He was an involved father who volunteered as a Scoutmaster for Troop 6 at North Park Baptist Church while his sons advanced through the scouting program and both earning the Eagle rank. He was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Texoma Valley Council and was a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. After retiring he started a second career as a Realtor where he worked in his family business, Atnip & Associates with his wife and sons. In addition, retirement afforded him and his wife the opportunity to travel throughout the US with the Oklahoma Green Country Airstream Club attending the national Airstream rallies. He enjoyed including his grandchildren in the trips. R. L. was predeceased by Zerma Lea Atnip, his wife of sixty-nine years, in July 2012. He is survived by his daughter Kay (Tom) Carnes of Stuart, FL; son Michael Atnip of Sherman; son Joe (Shanna) Atnip of McKinney; grandchildren, Jim (Donna) Carnes of Sherman; Laura (Kris) Creeden of Clermont, FL; Chris (Jennifer) Carnes of Stuart, FL; and Conner Atnip of McKinney. He was also blessed with six- great grandchildren: Brandon & Katelyn Carnes of Sherman; Courtney & Collin Creeden of Clermont, FL; and Christopher & Kayla Carnes of Stuart, FL. Also, surviving are cousins Mary Atnip of Pasadena, TX and Mary McCord of Garland, TX and nephews Hugh Brown and Gary Brown of Sherman. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 19th at Dannel Funeral Chapel with The Rev. Dr. Mike Lawson of First Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Cedarlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to First Baptist Church's " Ministry of Encouragement", at 400 S. Travis St., Sherman, TX - 75090, which played a major role in R.L.'s happiness during the final years of his life.
