Obituary For Robert Cecil "RC" Harmon
Robert Cecil Harmon, 98, of Sherman, Texas, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025.
Rosary will be at 6:00 PM and the family will greet friends from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, June 12th at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, June 13th at St. Anne’s Catholic Church of Sherman with Reverend Bruce Bradley (from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church) celebrating the mass. Interment will follow at Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman. Arrangements are by Dannel Funeral Home.
RC Harmon was born in Sherman, Texas, to Cecil Timothy Harmon and Laura Elsie Harmon on July 24, 1926. He graduated from Sherman High School in January of 1945. He was co-captain of the district winning Bearcats in 1943.
He married his first wife, Elsie Lou Miether on February 5, 1950. He married his second wife, Beatrice (Bea) O’Hanlon Herod on June 6, 2003 after the loss of both their spouses. A beautiful relationship followed with Bea and the extended family.
He graduated from North Texas State College in 1950 in Denton, Texas. He worked as an Engineer for IBM for 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army and Texas National Guard. He received from the 111th Army Area Group 14 awards including the cherished Legion of Merit from the U.S. Army and the Texas Lone Star Distinguished Service Medal.
During his military career he was commander of the Sherman National Guard unit during its activation into federal service during the Berlin Wall Crisis in 1962-1963. Later he commanded the First Tank Battalion and was Executive Officer of the 3rd Brigade, 49th Armored Division in Dallas. While in Austin he was the commandant of the Texas Military Academy at Camp Mabry and commanded the 111th Army Group.
While in Austin he continued his interest in archeology, paleontology, and astronomy, and became an honorary lifetime member of the Travis County Archeological Society and the Central Texas Paleontological Society. He was President of the statewide Texas Archeological Society. He served as Camp Director for three different field schools. In 2001 he was given the first Francis Stickney Award by the Texas Archeological Society honoring him for his contribution to the preservation of Texas pre-history. The Texas historical Commission followed with the George Christian Award for RC’s work as their Archaeological Steward for more than 15 years.
RC Harmon is preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Lou Harmon, his father Cecil Timothy Harmon, and his mother Laura Elsie Harmon.
RC Harmon is survived by his spouse Bea Harmon, brother Ben Harmon (Juanita), and his three sons David Harmon, Robert Harmon and Dan Harmon (Lisa). He has two step-children: Robert Herod (Stacye), Stephanie Singleton (David).
He has seven grandchildren: Kacie Harmon, Krystal Lowe (Jacob), Jennifer Johnson (Arron), Johnathan Harmon (Jennifer), Chris Simpson, Daniel Harmon, Makenzie Harmon. He has three step-grandchildren: Cody Herod (Kellye), Kari McDaniel (Trent), and Brandon Singleton (Elyssa).
He has ten great-grandchildren: Kaden Harmon, Kason Southerland, Lady Ann Lowe, Levi Lowe, Gillian Johnson, Chloe Johnson, Courtney Harmon, Isaac Harmon, Jace Harmon, and Avery Harmon. He has eight step-great-grandchildren: Bret Herod, Kailey Kuhn (Tyler), Ally McDaniel, Kimber Swank, Brody Swank, Will Singleton, Wyatt Singleton, and Annie Singleton.
Pallbearers will be Chris Simpson, Daniel Harmon, Cody Herod, Brandon Singleton, Kaden Harmon, Kason Harmon, Levi Lowe, Will Singleton, and Wyatt Singleton.
Memorials may be given to Sherman Historical Museum or St. Jude’s Hospital. The family of RC Harmon wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Three Oaks Hospice, Grayson Court, and Cedar Hollow.
