Obituary For Shirley Jean Holt

Shirley Jean Lacy Holt, an only child, was born in Sherman at Wilson N. Jones Hospital on Feb. 14, 1939, to Arthur and Sarah Lacy. She left us on Saturday morning, Nov. 16, 2019. She lived her entire life is Sherman growing up in a family of true cowboys who worked cattle for Pete Hudgins. As she described it, her house was near the Post Oak Creek cattle pens in the area of town that is now Washington St., Ricketts, Freeman, and Maple. When we would drive those streets she would describe in detail how the land was as a kid, today covered in houses. Her roots were in here; this was her place. On the one occasion in 2017, despite rarely getting out and about town, when she lived approximately 7 weeks outside of Sherman, she lamented how she would fare living someplace where nothing was familiar as she road to the airport. This was home.

In 1963, she gave birth to her daughter, Sarah. She considered her daughter her greatest accomplishment. In 1972, she married the love her life, Paul Holt - this was her second greatest accomplishment. She loved animals - especially dogs and cats - and was a dog groomer at Dorthy’s Poodle Salon. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her mother Sarah Goff Lacy, her father (Charles) Arthur “Hoppy” Lacy, her husband Paul Holt, and many other loved family members. She is survived by her daughter Sarah and husband Mike McMaster of Las Vegas; her step-sons Ricky and wife Cathy Holt of Whitewright and Bobby and wife Susan Holt of McKinney, granddaughter Nicole Holt and her husband Geronimo M. Rodriguez Jr. of Austin; grandson Alex and his wife Mary Evelyn Holt; niece Charlotte and husband Marlin Cobb of Sherman; and cousins Sammie Glenn, Jaynie Dennon, and Robert and Malcom Lee Lacy.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. at Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman. Rev. Louella Williams will officiate. A family visitation will be held from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman. In lieu of flowers, please make donations ARF House or Texans for Safe and Drug-Free Youth.

We are never really prepared as we think we are when a member of our family leaves us. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Shirley meant a lot to the Garcia Family. We loved her spirit and learned a lot from her. Since the day she had to leave her "Barbie House" as she would call it we knew it wouldn't be easy for her and it wasn't easy for us either because she had become a family neighbor. We love you Shirley. Francisco & Reina Garcia and Family
