Obituary For Shirley Whetzle

Shirley Anne Foster Whetzle, 85, of Sherman, passed away Friday, July 24, 2015, at Carrus Specialty Hospital in Sherman. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 30th, in Dannel Funeral Chapel. Pastor Leland Samuelson will officiate. Interment will follow in Cedarlawn Memorial Park immediately afterward. Shirley was born March 18, 1930 in Lima, Ohio, to Virgil and Helen Jolly Foster. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1947, and later attended North Texas State College in Denton. In 1952, she married Don Whetzle, and they enjoyed over 54 years together before his death in 2006. She was employed by Mobil Oil Co. in Dallas for over 10 years. After moving to Sherman, Shirley devoted over 20 years of service as secretary for Key Memorial United Methodist Church, retiring in 1992. She maintained her membership with the church even after retirement. In her more active years, Shirley was a member of the Sherman Service League. She loved to travel, participated in numerous bridge clubs, and was quite adept on the bowling lane. She had quite a history of caring for stray dogs in the area, and loved her 'girls', Maggie and Dottie. Local sports were a favorite past time, especially her Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers. She was also a frequent spectator at any sporting event in which her grandchildren happened to be involved. She was known as GiGi to her grandchildren, and to all their friends. Preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband and her sister Charlotte Humphreys, Shirley is survived by her daughters: Lisa Barrett and husband Mark, of Tom Bean, and Linda Whetzle, of Sherman; sister, Judy Reid and husband Tommy, of Kingwood; grandchildren: Terry Archer, Erin Barrett and Melissa Barrett and her significant other, Aaron Skyberg; and great-grandchildren: Braylin Barrett, Landin Skyberg and Baylee Skyberg. The Whetzle family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Drs. M. Rathod and Nathan Watson, as well as the staff of Carrus Specialty Hospital, for the diligent care they provided Shirley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Throughout my childhood, Aunt Shirley, Uncle Don, Lisa and Linda were a big part of my life - we spent so many great vacations and every holiday together. Shirley was always the strong one of the sisters - but she also had a huge heart, and a never ending soft spot for her kids and all her dogs. I will always see her laughter and beauty in my cherished memories. ~ Lauren Hanley, Dallas, Texas
