Obituary For Steven Mexia

A funeral mass will be celebrated for Steven Mexia, Sr. on Thursday, August 23, 2018, at 10:00AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sherman. Father Jeremy Myers will celebrate the mass. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery. A reception will be held at St. Mary’s after services. A rosary will be said on Wednesday, August 22 at 6:00 PM at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman, followed by a visitation until 8:00 PM. Steve was born in Sherman on December 26, 1928, to Senobio and Edubijes Mejia. He was the oldest of four children, with three sisters: Angelita, Mary, and Anita. All of them attended Sherman Schools, and Steve graduated in 1946 from Sherman High. After graduation, Steve went to Henderson County Junior College and then transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. From there he was called into service by the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After fulfilling his duty with the Army, Steve was honorably discharged as a Technical Sergeant, coming home to Sherman in 1953. Soon Steve met the love of his life, Juanita Rodriguez, and they were married in 1954. After working at Anderson Clayton for a few years, he then took a position with the U. S. Postal Service and completed 27 years of service before retiring in 1985. Juanita was also employed at that time and she “encouraged” her husband not to sit around while she was at work, so he became an employee at Grayson County College Golf Course, where he did more golfing than working. Steve and Juanita were blest with three sons: Steve Jr., Marcus, and Michael; and a daughter, Victoria. Steve enjoyed playing golf and watching sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys. He was also very talented at woodworking and was instrumental in expanding the family home. He loved being with his family, especially when everyone was there for family meals and gatherings. The family often gathered around the table to share stories, and all will remember Steve laughing and spoiling his grandkids. Steve will be missed by his family and all of the people who had the good fortune to know him. He lived his entire life as one who upheld the values of honor, duty, and family. Steve is survived by his sons: Steve Mexia, Jr. of Sherman, Marcus Mexia and wife Carolyn of Carrollton, and Michael Mexia of Broussard, Louisana. Also three granddaughters: Stephanie Lippard, Sadie Mexia, and Sarah McKendree; and four grandsons: Steve Mexia, Marc Mexia, Lucas Swensen, and Christopher Mexia; and a great grandson, Deacon Lippard. Survivors include a sister, Mary Saldana of Ft. Worth. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Juanita, and daughter, Victoria; and two sisters, Angelita and Anita.
