Obituary For Teddy Wayne Underwood
Teddy Wayne Underwood was called home to be with the Lord and joined many precious family members Monday night, January 24th. He was surrounded by family and friends that are also “family”. Over the last few years Teddy had courageously fought many health battles with a smile on his face and a deep appreciation for all of you who had helped him.
Teddy was born in Mulberry Bottom, Texas on May 16, 1943, to Norman Franklin (Frank) Underwood and Otha Ophelia Walls Underwood. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved siblings: Willie Dell, Allen, Doris, and Charles. He is survived by 2 sisters, Barbara Farris and Wanda Smith and his four children: Andrew Underwood (Allison), Michelle Callahan (Mark), Kerri Bates (Paul) and Kevin Underwood (Kitty). He also leaves behind grandchildren, two great grandbabies, nieces and nephews (many of whom were only related by love).
Teddy is survived by his wife of 35 years, Beverley Mullenix Underwood who he met at Burlington Industries where he would be found practicing songs. Teddy loved all music. He had a beautiful voice and over the years played in many country bands, sang on his church praise and worship team, and began taking his karaoke to the local nursing home to entertain the residents with the “Brothers and Sisters”. Great times were had by all.
Prior to retirement Teddy was a maintenance mechanic, working a combined 46 years at Burlington Industries, Washington Iron Works, and Kwikset Black & Decker. He missed seeing people and went back to work for Walmart first as a greeter and then as a maintenance mechanic. There were very few problems that he could not fix and would gladly help anyone.,
Teddy was a loving and outgoing person who never met a stranger. To borrow a phrase from his son-in-law, Mark, “Teddy could win over any room in 5 minutes”. He always had a piece of gum for everyone, a magic trick, or a joke to share. Beloved by all, he was willing to help anyone at any time. We have been blessed by many wonderful friendships that have lasted for decades.
A Celebration of Teddy’s Life will be held at Heritage Church of the Nazarene, 601 Heritage Parkway, Friday at 2 pm. The family will greet friends following the service.
