Obituary For Veona Hughes
Funeral services for Veona Carlton Hughes, age 95, of Sherman will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2015 with visitation at 10 at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman, Texas. The Rev. Rob Shepherd of East Sherman Baptist Church will officiate. Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will be her Grandsons and Great-Grandsons. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Veona passed away on Saturday, June 27 at a family home in Providence Village, Texas after a short illness. Veona, the daughter of Ova Earl Carlton and Bessie Mae Cooper Carlton, was born June 16, 1920 in her grandmother’s home at Cotton Center near Bonham, Texas. She attended rural and Bonham schools followed by Draughn Business College in Dallas. She met Thomas Roy Hughes during construction projects on Highway 82 and the Lake Texoma Dam. They married October 31, 1942 and she began a new life as a soldier’s wife. After WWII, they settled in Sherman where she and Roy raised their three daughters. Veona was an active member of East Sherman Baptist Church, served in various offices of the Letter Carrier’s Auxillary, and enjoyed an active social life with many friends and family. She was employed for 27 years at Sears Roebuck, retiring in 1983 as a business office supervisor. Her hobbies and interests included writing, water skiing, camping, crafts, cooking and sewing. In later years she wrote extensively about her national and international trips with local travel clubs through which she made many close friends from all over the world. Veona is survived by daughters Mary Lynn Hardinger, Kathleen Hughes and Gerri Sue Hoffman, sisters Glenda Mulkey and Joyce Carlton, four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her special Aussie family Jim, Margaret, Mark and Rachel Wilkins and many others who will miss her wit and loving attention. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy, grandchildren Lisa Anne Cummings and Nicholaus Jacoby, sister Betty Bradford, son-in-law Bob Hoffman and brother-in-law Joe Mulkey.
