Obituary For Victor Lee Popplewell, Sr

Victor Lee Popplewell, Sr, 91, of Sherman, left this earth to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 23, 2023, at Celebration Senior Living in Denison. A celebration of Victor’s life will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman. Pastor Leland Samuelson will officiate. Victor will receive a Masonic Burial Rite and The United States Coast Guard will accord military honors at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman following the service. The family will greet friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.

Victor was born in Sherman to Jim Lee and Yulah Mae Davis Popplewell on February 21, 1932. He married his first love, Inis Mae Newman, and together had an amazing son, Victor Lee Popplewell, Jr. He married his second love, Marie Stubbs Wooton, adding to his family, and lived happily for 35 years.

Victor served in the Texas Army National Guard just out of high school, and served our country in the US Coast Guard retiring after 25 years. He was a veteran of the Korean and Viet Nam wars, and was awarded numerous medals and commendations. Victor is also mentioned in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Victor loaned many of his personal military items for display at the Perrin AFB Historical Museum in Denison, Texas. Victor was a 32nd Degree Mason serving the Lodge in all stations prior to his appointment as Worshipful Master in the Sherman Travis Lodge. He was also a sojourner Mason, visiting many lodges around the world.

Victor is preceded in death by his loving wife of 35 years, Marie, his parents Jim Popplewell and Yulah Harrington, his brothers Jimmie and Fredrick Popplewell, and his sister Shirley McWhorter.

Victor is survived by a family that will miss him every day: his son Victor Lee Popplewell, Jr. and wife Ramona of Southmayd, his daughter and son-in-love Ann and Mark Runnels, his son and daughter-in-love Tom and Cindy Wooton, and his son and daughter-in-love Eric and Tuesday Wooton. “Pawpaw” is survived by 13 grandchildren: Cora, Andy, and Sarah Popplewell; Cole, Suzy, and Janae Runnels; Amber Gillam, Crystal Bowman, and Holly Peterman; and Britton, David, Caleb, and Alexander Wooton. “Pawpaw” is also survived by ten great-grandchildren, and one he hadn't met yet. Also missing Victor is his baby sister, Ruth Hightower and husband Galen.
