Obituary For Violet Marie Bruce

Violet (Vi) Bruce was born July 16, 1923, and she died on August 5, 2019, with her loving son, Mark holding her hand. She was a 1941 graduate of Denison High School and attended Draughon School of Business. She married Hollis M. Bruce in 1947 and had two sons while her husband attended TCU in Ft. Worth. They then moved to San Antonio and lived there until the boys were in Junior High. The crystal, china, and silver remained packed for ten years, as Vi thought the family would not stay long.

After moving to Sherman, Vi worked six years for her brother-in-law, Albert W. Brown, CPA at his accounting firm until moving to Dallas where she lived for thirty three years. She was an avid golfer, winning several tournaments. Vi moved to Sherman in 2004 and lived with her son Mark until her passing. Vi loved life and her sons were her world. The Bruce’s home was always a hang out for her kids friends even after they were out of college. Texas/OU weekends were a big deal. She hosted “Smokey” the cannon, “Bevo”, and the Silver Spurs. One of her favorite get-togethers was when all three of the Erickson girls of San Antonio attended.

She loved working in the yard and sitting on her patio, the day before her death she sat in the front yard admiring the huge oak tree. If she wasn’t outdoors you could find Vi in her favorite wingback chair looking out the window at the Crosthwaite’s Crepe Myrtle trees. In 2007, she survived open heart surgery, and then 72 hours later had brain surgery. These events did little to slow her down over her next twelve years. She was preceded in death by husband Hollis M. Bruce, son Ronald Berry Bruce, and parents G.C. and Fannie Jones.

Vi is survived by her loving son and caretaker Mark Bruce of Sherman and son Mike Bruce and wife Glenda of Poetry, TX; three granddaughters: Amy Walker and husband Worthy, Megan Lucas and husband Joe, and Lindsey Bruce; great-grandchildren: Dean and Sydney Walker; two very special nieces: Annette Gudgel of Belton, TX and Carol Light of Bolingbrook, IL.; nephew Albert Brown of Denison; special life long friend Penny Erickson of San Antonio and “Diva” the family Doberman who watched over her daily.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Vi Bruce to:

The ARF House (Animal Refuge Foundation) 3377 Spalding Rd. Sherman, TX 75092

Graveside services will be held by Dannel Funeral Home on Saturday, August 17th at 10:00 AM at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman. Pastor Leland Samuelson will officiate. Vi would want anyone attending to wear cool, casual clothing.

Mrs. Bruce was the epitome of warmth, kindness, and friendship to all whom she shared her life with. That never changed over all those years ago when the Bruce's were our next door neighbors growing up. She was the ultimate hostess who could be considered a star of her own Food Channel show or HGTV decorator! We'll miss you so much, Mrs. Bruce, but we know you're with your love, Mr. Bruce, and of course, keeping Eric, our Dad, laughing.

Mom was a wonderful teacher and with Dad's influence, they raised two sons who were taught to be honest and conscientious. We moved from San Antonio to Sherman and then to Dallas. Under the tutelage of our parents, we always made great friends at each place, and begrudgingly left behind those friends we loved. I learned from Mom & Dad the importance of respect, honor, devotion and love which have afforded me the family I enjoy today. They also taught us an invaluable lesson of hard work which I hope I passed on to my three daughters. I am grateful for the nearly twenty years we spent together as I was building my CPA career. I smile thinking of those precious daily moments we shared. Her experience and knowledge were a blessing. Today many clients still inquire about her, and my response is she is Vi is still inquisitively pursuing a conversation...she knew how to make others feel at ease. I know Mom and Dad are together watching Mark and I, in anticipating our next adventures. Cheers, Mike Bruce

How blessed we are to have fate bring the Bruces' to be our next door neighbors more than 55 years ago! While the time spent as next door neighbors was relatively short, the years since have only added to the memories! From "sharing" the alley for bike rides, to summer evening gatherings, to "all neighbors" flag football games with the Connolly's, to camping in Colorado, to July at the Hilton, to family weddings...the shared memories will live on thanks to the gracious hospitality, heartfelt happiness and endearing personality of the one and only Mrs. Bruce! We know Heaven has just gotten a little more fun with Vi as the hostess! Let us always raise a glass to the many gifts Vi shared with us...including her boys! We will keep you both in our thoughts and prayers at this time...with simcere gratitude to you Mark for providing unwavering care for your Mom. May God bless you Mark and Mike and give you comfort at this time. And, may we all share a little of the happiness Vi brought to us with others In our life...in her memory! And,

So many good times could not put them all in one page. Thinking of you Mark as you were her rock and committed caregiver for so many years. You did a wonderful job with your mom and she had so much fun because of your love and support. Know this is a difficult time. It is different when you are the only one in the house. It is also difficult as you always think you could have done more. But you did above more. You will have a time that you may feel guilty for not doing something better or faster. But you were always there when she needed you. That is all that matters.
