Obituary For Zachary Alvarez

Zachary Nicholas Alvarez, age 14, earned his angel wings on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Children’s Hospital in Dallas, Texas. His parents, Marc and Laurie Alvarez, were blessed by his birth on Sunday, November 24, 2002. Although, Zachary lived in Sherman, Texas, he was a freshman at Denison High School. Prior to attending school in Denison, Zachary was a student at the Montessori Academy of North Texas and Fairview Elementary. Then, as a fourth grader, he joined his mom at Houston Elementary and was on the road to becoming a Denison Yellow Jacket. Zachary was a member of Sherman Bible Church. He was drawn towards God at an early age. He so wanted to become a follower of Jesus that he went forward three times before he was officially ready to be baptized. Zachary went to church camp almost every summer. He participated in many youth activities including Powerhouse’s Jam Team, Vacation Bible School, SB Games, and First Wednesdays. He truly enjoyed experiencing God through the Bible, prayer, song, and worship. Zachary was a faithful servant sharing by example the light of God with everyone he met. Zachary loved his family fiercely. He became a big brother to Lani Grace Alvarez on June 30, 2006. He was so proud to have a little sister. Lani Grace explained that they were not like regular siblings who fight with each other. Instead, they both enjoyed entertaining each other. He was quite proud of her accomplishments especially in gymnastics, and often bragged to his friends that his sister was stronger than them! Zachary enjoyed spending time with his dad talking sports, playing sports, and watching sports. Though their team preferences might have conflicted in basketball, Warriors vs. Lakers, they could agree on their football teams, UT and Dallas Cowboys! Zachary loved his momma, too! He knew that he could count on her for anything, and he really loved her chicken and dumplings!! Zachary looked forward to holidays, birthdays, and family celebrations. He loved to have the family, as he referred to his cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, come over for celebration meals. Lastly, Zachary loved his dog, Cocoa. Zachary was a fun loving, easy going kid! His kind heart and playful spirit made it easy to gather friends which he did wherever he went. Zachary was blessed to be surrounded by many close friends throughout his life. Zachary was an avid athlete. He started gymnastics at age 3, then progressed to soccer, baseball, and basketball. In the summer, he took swimming lessons and attended various sports camps. He participated and placed in Punt, Pass, and Kick competitions. He joined the AYSES Soccer Club, for whom he played goalkeeper until February 2017. Starting in seventh grade, Zachary was a member of the Scott Middle School football team, basketball team, track and field team, and soccer team. He loved his sports, and hoped to play professional soccer! In February 2017, Zachary was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He began receiving treatment immediately at Children’s Hospital in Dallas. Though he weathered his treatment plan well and his prognosis was for complete recovery, he was hospitalized at the beginning of October. After a lengthy stay, he passed away due to complications caused by his leukemia. Zachary was preceded in death by a cousin, Joshua Goodman and an uncle, David Alvarez. He is survived by his parents and sister, his birthmother and angel sister, his grandparents, Frank and Jackie Alvarez, Sherman, TX and El Roy and Lois Hallman, Edmond, OK. He is survived by Uncle Frank and Aunt Chi Wei Alvarez, Round Rock, TX, Uncle Leon and Aunt Kim Goodman, Sherman, TX, Uncle George and Aunt Penny Keller, Russellville, AR, Uncle Kenny and Aunt Cindy Wilkerson, Sherman, TX and Uncle Scott and Aunt BooBoo (Kimberly) Tuggle, Watauga, TX. He is survived by two great aunts, Donna Ellis, Lubbock, TX and Ellen Niswonger, Garden City, KS. Zachary is survived by his cousins, Jordan Goodman, Hope Goodman, Luke Keller, Noah Keller, Jonah Keller, Micah Keller, Alexandra Alvarez, Frankie Alvarez, Bella Wilkerson, Braxton Wilkerson, Brody Tuggle, and Joshua Tuggle. Family Night will be Friday, November 10th from 5:00-6:30 pm at Dannel Funeral Home. It will end promptly at 6:30 pm so that the family can attend an event to honor Zachary. Zachary’s Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, November 11th at 11:00 am at Sherman Bible Church located at 2515 W. Lamberth Rd. Sherman, TX. Guests are welcome to wear Zachary’s shirt. There will be a reception for all after the ceremony. Memorial donations may be made to the “Zachary Alvarez Foundation" at any branch of First United Bank. There is also an active gofundme account (www.gofundme.com/zachattacks). In lieu of flowers, donations can also be made to the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Medical Center, Dallas or the Katybugs and Butterflies Foundation, Inc. located at 193 Scenic Drive, Pottsboro, TX 75076.
